OK, I've had a boys look and couldn't find an answer, so now it's time to ask the experts. I bit the bullet when Qantas offered discount FF bookings and booked a trip ADL - SYD - ADL for a management team reunion lunch that I have been attending for the last 25 years. Fly out Thursday and back on Friday. I know the SA borders are "opening up" tomorrow, but I'm starting to get cold feet with all the rules that now seem to be appearing, and I don't trust politicians

Has anyone made an overnight trip to Sydney of late and if so what was involved from a paperwork perspective?

If I cancel, do I get my points back? Do I get a refund for the taxes. Either way I'm not going to lose sleep over the points (40k) or the taxes ($75).

I'm double vaxed and booked in for a booster in December.

Thanks in advance.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Points back - yes (quickly)
Taxes back - yes (slowly)

Normally a there is a points cancellation fee but I belive this is still waived.

SA paperwork wise I don't have experience with. I hope it's not as painful as WA has been

As for the SA paperwork I think you will still need to apply for the boarding crossing permit. From what I understand if you apply for this prior to 23 Nov you will get knocked back, if applying on or after the 23 Nov you should be approved. It was similar last year and the SA Govt web sites do include such detail on their website, I also find it hard to understand why they did not configure the approval process to enable permits to be auto approved for a date that is post opening.

... because that would assume a degree of foresight/forward planning on the part of our paid representatives??

I applied yesterday to travel this Friday and return Sunday (from NSW). Approval was given within a hour.

The issues I have, and I'm sure I missed one:
  • you are still required to have a COVID test 72 hours prior to arrival
  • you need to download an SA Govt app (on arrival you are given a code for the app. I'm sure they have something for app'less people like me but just annoying)
  • when applying the SA Govt wants your medical card number up front, presumably so they can bill you for treatment should it be needed.
So it's still not straight forward to arrive, presumably SA still has the police guarding the Jetways form the aircraft.
