I've never had the luxury of flying on any seat above economy but recently I've accumulated enough points for an international (4 sectors) upgrade from full economy to business class with Qantas.

Wondering if anyone might be able to tell me whether this upgraded seat will now accumulate FF points and Status credit as a business class ticket or whether the FF points/status points will still be credited under the original economy class seat purchased. Also, does the same apply with free upgrades as well?

You will get points and status credits for the fare class paid for.

With any "free" upgrades, most of the time you'll get the points for the flight paid for.

Sometimes though things aren't entered into the systems correctly and you get the points etc for the upgraded flight.

You're not wrong there. I was once travelling back from SFO on a United flight and whilst sitting in the plane a technical problem was discovered which caused the flight to be cancelled and I had to stay overnite in SFO (at United's expense). Next day checked in for the same United flt back to Sydney and everything went ok.

A week or two later I happened to check my account balance online and realised I had been credited for two SFO-SYD sectors 1 day apart. I was happy to consider the error as a small compensation for the inconvenience I had incurred.

And sometimes you do not get ANY points and SC's for the upgraded, so you need to phone them then. Swings and round-abouts.

Exactly; if things "swing" and I somehow get point's and SC's for the cabin travelled over the fare paid, I happily accept this, thus ensuring things swing my way.

If on the "round-about" & I don't get the points and SC's that I should have, I contact the carrier thus ensuring things travel on the round-about in my direction 8)

I recommend you wait until you have enough for an upgrade from discount economy to business class. Have you ever priced a full economy fare on an international sector? It is often as much as the disount business class options.

For international flights, full economy is ONLY the full Y fare, not the flexible B, H, K fares that are included as full econpomy for domestic flights. For example, a one-way SYD-LAX in full Y is over A$4000, or over $8000 return. I can buy a business class Circle Pacific fare for less than that!

Thanks everone for all the info!

Wow, I didn't know full economy was soo expensive. If thats the case, I think I'll need to wait a little longer before making that upgrade. Cheers NM for the tip![/quote]
