Looks like I will be working at Newman over the summer. Just wondering if anyone knows what airlines the big miners use to ferry people from Perth to Newman?

Do the flights organised by the big miners allow for frequent flyer points to be accrued? (As they may book some kind of discount class tickets?)

Also, if it is Qantas, is it worth taking out a QFF or AA membership to accrue some points as I will probably do the one way trip 10 times with an additional 2 SYD - PER flights.

Most miners book full economy tickets with charter airlines.

To Newman...

BHP uses Alliance Airlines and BHP has a special relationship with Velocity.
Rio Tinto uses National Jet Systems - will give you Qantas Frequent Flyers at full economy rate.
Some smaller miners fly on the Qantas Comm. service or on Skippers (no ff points on skippers).

Hope this helps answer your question

There is also Skywest that flies up there.

IME, if you're working for a contracting company, and not BHP/RIO direct; then you will fly Qantas, Virgin or Skywest and earn full miles based on fare type purchased.

Alliance fly from ADL to Olympic Dam, another BHPB site, and that is done (i.e. booked, checkin, points earn, etc) via QF. Makes any relationship with Velocity seem a bit less special.

Certainly on these flights booked via QF it is possible to earn points and SC. Apparently Olympic Dam site policy is no earning for BHPB purchased fares on that route. But there is no block to adding a FF number to a booking reference on line.

Keep in mind also, that it varies per site also.

For example... with Rio Tinto; most of their Skywest flights up to Argyle are chartered, so no earn on those.

With BHP, all flights to Ravensthorpe regardless of whether chartered or not are with National Jet and no FF or SC are earned on these.

anat0l will be able to confirm also the situation with Mount Keith and Leinster (of which Alliance flies to both I think?). His experience was you could get points on one, but not the other (both BHP sites).

I was up at Leinster and Mount Keith recently doing some scoping studies on a couple of Nickel West (former WMC now BHPB) sites.

We flew Skipper's up to Leinster so no points on that one. I'm not sure whether Alliance fly to Leinster; I have conflicting reports as to whether this is so or not so.

On departing from Mount Keith back to Perth we flew Alliance. Oddly enough there are several brochures (and even some of the company collateral that we got) that say that these Alliance routes were creditable to Velocity, but the Alliance website and the Alliance staff all said Qantas. Fair enough, it was.

I got 600 miles and no status credits from my WME-PER flight. Whether that is the correct amount or not I have no idea. I emailed Alliance Perth Ops about this but they have instructed me to call QF (of which I have not done yet). It's awkward because the airline earning table for QF does not include Alliance (QQ) at all.

I think Rio is now chartering NJS flights as well, rather than buying seats on them. I have a mate who works for them and I remember him complaining a few months back that he doesn't get points for his flights anymore.

Rio has awarded a MASSIVE contract to Skywest.
All flights to West Angeles is changing to Skywest in November. On the Skywest flights to Wst Angeles, no FFP, it's in the contract.
Qantas does fly to Newman. I have flown myself and yes, you do get points. I don't know who else flyes to Newman, but l have stopped there to refuel when l went with Skippers once. (Note, try to avoid Skippers...)

Some National Jet flights, you do get points. If you leave from the National Jet Terminal, no points (White BAe146 plane with a NJS tail). If you leave on a National Jet flight from the Qantas terminal in Perth, most likely points (Qantas tail).
I was also flying to Mt Keith years ago and that was NJS (Qantas emblem), but then changed to Alliance.
A few friends of mine have also started to fly from Adelaide to Roxby Downs with alliance, and they said that points are a go too.

As noted earlier, Qantas, Skywest and now also Virgin Blue fly to (thriving? :P) Newman.
