A bit of a conundrum. I "think" I know the answer, but can I please check?

Want to travel FCO-DXB-SYD next year in Econ.
I was planning to just buy an EK ticket, but thought I'd look at the QF site to see if I could get a Classic Reward.
Low and behold there is one!

Given the current challenges of CR seats via DXB Next year I have already bought EK tickets for the outbound to Europe. Sadly not enough points on EK yet to try for upgrades.

So......

I'm tempted to use up some QF points on this EK flight FCO-DXB-SYD, but........
There is no seat selection option, so not keen.

But.

Maybe once I make the booking, with the booking reference I can jump on to the EK site to make seat selection?

My gut feel is, this won't work. Because EK have three fare types, each offering different "customisation" options, mileage etc. So I'm assuming my CR seat booked via QF, will be the lowest fare type (Saver) that doesn't allow seat selection anyway.

Does that make sense? Or do you think I might get a seat selection option?

If you book through QF, there's a separate PNR for EK (whether booked as a CR on an EK code or as a revenue fare on QF codes).

As a LTG, you'll get standard and preferred seat selection for free (but the good seats like 68A and 68K cost more - my dad is booked into 68A and 68B with his partner and IIRC, seat selection was about $430 from MXP to MEL for the extra legroom seat and about $50 for the standard seat next to it - he was charged as he doesn't have status).
