Hi Everyone! I'm currently QF Bronze :( and taking my first QF flight in about 2 months next week which I'm really excited for. It's only a short hop from SYD - MEL but I love the staff and environment of Qantas!

Anyways, I have a question about the Faster, Smarter Checkin process, I know it is really simple to 'checkin' with a touch of my Q Card at the reader but what if I want a boarding pass? And I do!! Do I go to the kiosk and then print a boarding pass? If so can I still use my Q Card as a boarding pass?

I just really want the boarding pass for my collection! ;)

I find that the ink they use on BP these days does not last that long.
So, if you want to keep the BP for your "collection", from now on, you might need to get onto the phtocopying of them as well as keeping the original.
Yeah, you can go to one of them chest high thing, scan your QF card and you get printed out a BP.
The pole thing will scan your QF card and issue a small tear off chit.
I think too that a lot of the dom check in counters have been removed from QFd MEL and SYD airports, its all serve yourself these days.
Remember years ago, the QFd SYD airport check in area used to have a lot of counters, now, a lot of it or all gone, replaced with bag drop off, yes, also serve yourself.
These days, I do OLCI and scan my QF card with the bar codes at the gate.
I don't do paper BP anymore, except when travelling to NZ. I have two EK BP, freshly printed, they were black, now, not come to a few months after the flight, its starting to fade!

I hope you get an "older 767" or a nice new modern 330 for your flight OP, and not a lousy 737.
I hate the narrow 737s.
A lot of people dont care if its narrow or wide body planes they fly on, but I do care.
I have made many bookings with QF, and was going to be QF PS, but with the enchancements post Jul 14, I think I am stuck with NB (Bronze) with QF for the rest of my life!
Try to get a window seat, and hope for (as I mentioned) a wide bodied plane, and a long wheel along the taxi ways, and by ways, before the final rush on down the runway, I find if the they give you a wide bodied, the take off over Botany Bay, with your right facing Brighton Le Sands, and left facing the oil storage place, and then the plane makes a right turn, is the most exciting one.
The wide bodied, when the plane makes a turn over the sea, wow, you have to feel it. Quasy feeling, as it can be quite a sharp turn, bravo to the QF/VA pilots who do it!
Personally, I would do OLCI, and then go to the counter to get the BP. Save your seat profile on your QF account now though, ie, Window.
Runway 34L/34R (and turn)... best.
Runway 16L/16R, not bad, but over land.
Runway thats adjacent to the Cross tunnel runway, while not as dramatic as the sea one, will do if they give you that.
Sorry for the long windedness.
I too love flights.

I gather that you already have one of the new bronze frequent flyer cards with the chip in it. If you need a hard copy for tax purposes or some other reason you could OLCI then save the pdf copy of your boarding pass to your computer with saves paper as you don't need to print it out.

Then at the boarding gate just scan your frequent flyer card as you would if you had a boarding pass remembering to take the docket that prints out with you as you need to show that to the CSM as you board the aircraft. You can use the card as a boarding pass no matter what method you originally used to checkin ie mobile/Qcard reader/OLCI/mobile or with a CSA.

Are you checking in any bags or travelling HLO (hand luggage only)?

If you OLCI & save the boarding pass to your device as a pdf copy then you don't need to go to a checkin counter.

So I guess that means you will be flying someone else. The question of course is who? Virgin Australia? Of course they also fly 737's.

I believe the service desk is not supposed to be used by bronze. Depending on airport there could be active attempts to move you to the kiosk check in.

Kiosk checking will issue a paper boarding pass but for recording keeping purposes the OLCI PDF might be better if you're well organised with electronic record keeping.

No matter how you check in you can scan the QFF card barcode at the gate.

The pole thing does not issue a chit. You get an SMS only.

I've used the service desk without issue to check in, but I don't know what they really think nor care, I prefer to interact with a person no interface with a another screen.

I'm travelling with checked baggage so I'm assuming I go to the bag drop but firstly visit the kiosk to print a boarding pass?

thanks to everyone for their responses :)

And I realised after this was SYD where they are less militant about enforcing the access rules on the service desk. Mainly BNE where I've experienced active attempts to turn people away from the service desk.

Yes. That would probably be best. You should be able to check in multiple methods if you want the PDF.

No matter how you check in you can scan the QFF card barcode at the gate.

Went to check-in at PER QP the other day. Was checked-in OK but the lounge staff there insisted I use my QFF card at the gate and refused a BP. OK I said.

Got to the gate but they could not read anyone's QFF card. This caused quite a hold up as they had to print out a BP for each passenger that was using their QFF card and then scan it.

Is using the QFF card only reliable? I've only tried once but it failed.

Same in Canberra too, even to the extent that they block the entry to the waiting queues filtering out those that 'need' to use a person and those they would like to do self service.

If you own a Qtag (or can borrow one) & have done OLCI then just walk in the terminal & head straight to the auto bag drop.

If you don't have the OLCI boarding pass to scan just hold your ff card against the white "Q" symbol at the bag drop & place your bag on the belt.

If you need a paper bag tag head to the kiosk first enter your ff card then it should display your name saying "already checked in", just select the continue button then the next screen should display a list if options so tick the first one "print bag tag" & follow the prompts.

If you did also want to print a boarding pass you can select the second option "print boarding pass" at the same time you print your bag tag.

Attach the paper tag then at the bag drop scan your ff card & put your bag on the belt.

I was very anti the card thing at first. But I've never had it fail, yet.

They have never printed a physical boarding pass for me, at the gate, since I started using QFF card with bar code.
All they do is issue a smallish piece of soft paper, at the QF departure gate, stating name, QFF number, and seat number.
Never failed on me either.
I prefer the bar code on the QFF than VA's system, of you or me, having to have QR code on a mobile device to scan at the gate, but now that we can keep mobile device on till final plane door is closed and locked, I am a happy poochie now, ie, have time to have a seat in my seat, and then turn mobile device off and pocket wifi off!

For Ajw373, of course we have no other choice, but true, QF keeps changing all my lovingly booked 330s/767s to a 737.
Have choosen and timed it right, SYD to BNE, BNE to SYD, and its like some one at QF can/has read my mind, and changed it all to 737.
Every single booking.
Anyroad, I will get my kicks now flying EK 777 SYD to CHC when I have the urge to fly. Less local Aust flights, meaning, more $ to spend on EK 777 J class/F class!
And yes, I do realise I have threadjacked this post.

A little tip, you will see, once you get to about departure gate 4/5, the are 2 pairs of sliding glass doors, leading to escalators going up on to another level, on the left.
Don't enter either of these, one for entry, one for exit.
This is in the domestic secure zone of QFd SYD airport.
This leads to the hallowed ground, its very expensive to join, but if you can afford it, and will fly QF again in the future, in Y/discY, then it might pay to join what we called the QP aka QC (Qantas Club).
Paying the QP fees, gives you access to QP in Aust and overseas as well.
I have used the ADLd, MELd, SYDd, SYDi, BNEi, AKLi, of course, the QP is not as lush as the F lounge, its worth it to get away from the "millions" of other flyers.

That is the boarding pass issued during boarding. If you actually approach the gate agent at the desk, which is not the cabin crew member scanning your card during boarding, they should be able to provide a printed boarding pass.
