Perth to Dubai to London in first class return is on sale for about $11K.
Perth to Dubai return in first class on the same metal $14K.

It is cheaper to book through to London but not to board!

This has to be where Qantas is just plain getting it wrong.

Have you checked the EK prices on the same fare.

This is something that occurs do to the number of seats available between AU and DXB as a whole.

Don't forget if you failed to board your LHR flight there isn't much point of saving the 3k as the fare would be cancelled from that point Onwards.

If you have seen EK fares prior to their tie up with QF, it wasn't unusual to see the AU to EU fares cheaper than the AU to DXB fares.

Even if I only need to go to Dubai, I would love to fly all the way to London and back in F if it's cheaper :)

It is closer to 12K actually (SYD LHR rtn).

Is that lowest price you have seen from QF on that route ?

Or, has it ever been cheaper in F with QF since the EK tie up ?

Decision, decision.....

Agree. Book a stopover (if allowed in the fare rules) and enjoy some time in London also :) or just the time in F

Well then you don't get the airline industry at all. Airlines the world over price fares like this hence people use hidden city ticketing

They are trying to increase their loading across the network with this kind of pricing and as other posters are saying all airlines do it. For $3K saved you could have a very enjoyable few days in London as a sideline holiday.

Or somewhere other than UK and save yourself a further ~$350 odd by avoiding UK APD...

Doesn't work like that in most cases though. If you look at the fare rules, there will be a max connection/stop over time in DXB, meaning you can't structure it so you arrive in DXB say on the 1st, stay until the 10th, then pop to London for a few days and come back on the 13th, and then connect back to AU.

True, but sometimes there is a combination of flights which will allow you to do just that. It sometimes does however mean spending a bit of time playing around with timings and destinations... There is also nothing to say you couldn't fly to LHR in F, then fly back to DXB on another ticket, spend the time there, then fly back to LHR to connect to the LHR-xDXB-PER... (Just think of the SC / points earn)

Pretty common industry practice. Fares are determined by the market and competition.

I think that there is a subtle message in the pricing. It's saying go to London and not Dubai. It would be my advice too :)

What about a 16 segment around the world business class fare?

$14,000 starting in Sydney
$7800 ish starting in J'Burg

even with a $5000 JNB J class positioning you are in front 1000 and have another JNB positioning flight for next trip!
