While helping a friend find a last minute J fare SYD-xx_-JFK (or EWR) (and return a week later) - noticed that itineraries which transit HKG (on CX) were among the most expensive. I was surprised that CX were not discounting such fares as many passengers would not wish to risk a HKG connection if possible..

Best we could find was on the AA website for $7300 (combo of AA and QF code share flights) - same itinerary on QF website was $7700+

BTW - she could have obtained award tickets on CX for her dates but choose not to transit HKG because of the possibility of delayed / cancelled flights.

Of approx 185,000 passengers that transit HKG each day many tix are purchased well in advance. Thinking further about the number of seats that CX needs to then sell over the next 12 months, the number of passengers (like your friend) might grow but currently isn't making an impact on seat prices as you showed.

The issue of disrupting the airport seems to have passed.
