We’re looking to book a trip to the Uk next July from Sydney. ideally via emirates as they fly direct to the city we are visiting. We would also consider flying into London and driving to our destination. Flights are already $3400, around the time we want to travel - they haven’t opened for our exact dates quite yet.

Does anyone know how airlines will price this period given the high costs this year? Should we just book now or hold out for a sale later in the year

Hi and welcome to AFF.

I’m seeing fares on Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Qatar in the region of $1900 return from Australia to London in July 2023. A recent email from Emirates had fares for $1600 to europe, although that was probably ‘off peak’.

I would expect fares in the $1900-$2200 range.

Some of the searches I’ve been doing (albeit in J) have shown significantly cheaper fares post Christmas/New Year - mainly Mar/Apr onwards.

If you see an advance sale for the period you want at a price you think is reasonable, book it!

Tools like ITA Matrix are useful for finding the cheaper periods and stay durations (eg if you going for about 2 wks you can put in a duration range like 10-17 days. Also open jaw - fly into London (and nearby airports - select other UK ports) and save on UK departure tax by flying home from Paris or Amsterdam etc (if that’s an option).

We want to travel over school holidays in July and into Newcastle.

If there is such a difference in price its probably worth transiting via London or stopping there during our stay. Given that we have to travel at a peak period I thinking its unlikely prices will come down that much! Pre pandemic we would regularly fly this route, book pretty late and pay no more than $2500

On EK, it’s around $2298 in/out of MAN v $2400 in/out of NCL in July. Not a lot of difference in/out of different UK airports. You might save $100+ home out of Europe but you need to get there of course.

Some cheaper options on other airlines.

I wouldn't transit via London if you have checked luggage.

It’s next year but the less transfers the better (unless you’re after bonus points and SCs!).

Many airlines (including Emirates) haven't started offering any sort of deals for travel next summer yet. This is normal - fares aren't normally discounted at the initial release date.

Traditionally, the "early bird" sales have come out around September or October for travel in the following year. That was before covid, though.

For $3400 if you don’t mind multiple stops you could possibly get a cheap Y ticket to Asia and then onwards in J.
I would think prices will come down before then though hopefully for you
