I doubt it, what you see is what you get, 1st leg would need to be CX so have have to call AS.

Sorry, I'm new to AS, the only airline can book an award ticket ex OZ is CX? QF, BA, EK & KE not allowed?

Each award can only use the one carrier apart from using Alaska within the US to get to your point of departure.

So depends where you live as to whether AA or Alaska is better for you.

Dale.

That's easy. Zero. :-|

CX do not operate any aircraft between Hong Kong and Australia which has a first class cabin. All of them (I believe so) are A330-300 aircraft with 2 or 3 classes (either Business & Economy, or Business & Premium Economy & Economy).

Thanks! Yep that's right. Just did some googling and it seems that the new business class seat is the best you will get. Still not a bad seat.

Im surprised they don't use aircraft with F class from Aus to HKG.

CX used to operate at least one flight per day to SYD with F service on it. I think they also similarly operated a flight to MEL. Never heard PER or other Australian stations get F serviced aircraft (at least in the last 5-7 years or so, but could be wrong).

The trade off is that they have a lot of frequency now.

Rumours were always in the mill that one day CX will replace one HKG/SYD service with an F equipped aircraft; most likely a 77W. To this day, we're still waiting. The only oneworld carrier operating F to HKG from Australia is QF ex-SYD. Likely doesn't help you in this case.

Do the miles expire ?

Read somewhere that if the account is inactive for two years, it may be deleted .

Further, how long after opening an AC could you then purchase miles ?

I opened one today, tried to buy but got an error message "Your AC is not eligible to buy miles..."

Thanks

EDIT: AC has to be at least 10 days old to purchase miles (see here)

Expire in 24 months

Yes need to wait a week or so before purchase

Once purchased miles appear in 24 hours

Keep in mind at this absolute current bargain price AS affiliates are not available to every destination they fly

I paid $3grand AUD for 2 x j tickets oz to hog return (120K miles).

IMO HKG is the key to and from OZ to rest of the world & fees out of there are pittance to here.

Could I ask some Qs ?

1) Could you use your miles to book for someone else, if yes, would they have to be a member ?

2) How many days out could you ask AS to book your CX seats ?

330 ?

350 ?

Cheers

These Alaskan Airlines miles deals pop up about 4 times a year with big bonus free (miles) but looks like they are now getting more frequent and boy oh boy they are a steal. And joining AS milage plan is free!.

I purchased some 120K AS miles in Dec. last, booked 2 x J to HKG return for a mere AUD$3100 last week for May next, that was with 35% free miles, now this latest offer has a 40% bonus.

Keep in mind AS Partners don't fly everywhere using these miles, but hey they do go to many cities/countries. One should research availability with CX 1st as its the only airline not showing on AS site, rest can be seen on AS site. Out of OZ to USA it is however hard to find J seas, PE & Y (coach) no problem.

An Example: SYD/HKG/ORD 120K miles (CX) in J return at current cost under 3 grand, hello!

Cant see why not to book anyone using miles.

I found 2 x J to HKG on CX for May just two weeks ago, never find those at QFF that close.

The only problem booking CX only on AS is have to call their toll free number and be flexible.

Most of the airiness AS are associated with allow one ways at half the price (unlike we know who) so if one needs to depart or go to different destinations it is possible by booking separate.

This AS deal is not the B all, but its sure beats the pants of most other deals.

My maths got 145,000 J to Europe via HKG on CX, which is like USD$2900ish from memory.

I just did a full calculation including the taxes applied to the points purchase and it comes to USD$3133.63 for 145,800 points which will get you from Australia to Europe via HKG on CX. At the current rate that converts to AUD$3457.99

Yep ripper deal 148K miles does the trick. Dr. friend just booked one way HAN/DFW/MEM on AA F one way was AUD$1350! using AS miles. I told him about the AS miles deal, man am I in his good books :).

My thanks to limewood for putting this under my nose.

Europe in J on CX for about $3.5K ? Is there a catch?

What's availability like. Say I called AS and sought a J seat to Europe in April (with flexibility of about a week, say). Any chance? Or 6 months out?

Can you call and find out availability before you buy?

Sorry, don't wish to look the gift horse ... maybe there is a Santa Claus ...

No catch. Award flight are on AS partners. Which means mainly QF, EK, BA & CX, just like the QF ffp.
If you cannot find availibilty as a QF freq flyer unlikely to find as a AS (non) frequent flyer
Or direct from AS as posts above

But that's my point. We all know that trying to get J Award flights on Qantas on major routes is a fool's errand without status and/or locking in a date 10-12 months ahead. Who will I be competing with if I look for AS Award flights on CX for example? Do AS have their own bucket of award seats with each airline, or just dip into the 'general' pool? If the latter, then the points may be bargains to buy, but turn very expensive if you can't use 'em.

I haven't forgotten Limewood's experience - but any other real world experiences in getting the flights - or close to - you want?

I gave AS a call earlier this week seeing if they have any CX award flights for July, turns out they do have a decent selection for MEL > HKG although the return leg i'd have to be leaving a few days earlier than originally planned. Waiting for those 10 days to pass by so I can purchase the miles and book it all in; return to HKG in J for a VERY good price is almost too good to be true but there's no catch.

Well possibly. But we're all in this to help one another.

Our J CX award flights to HKG were only booked late last month for early May!, had a choice at the time of 5 days over the week, just incredible availability and points.

Does anyone know how many miles required from Australia to Asia on CX (to BKK or ICN via HKG)?
