Fantastic Alaska Airline miles deal on again

I'm just waiting for my account to clear so I can purchase. I'm planning NYC via HKG and banking some for next year too.

I'm tempted to buy more after using up mine for 2 x J CX flights thanks to AS. However AS had this deal on at least 3 or 4 times in past 12 months, so all is not lost.

How does one find out how many points would be required for a flight on CX departing cairns?

I'm planning PER-NYC on CX soon, but my travel dates are a bit far out still. Just out of curiosity, how have people's experiences with phoning AS (toll free via Skype) and booking J seats on CX been? Are they relatively common for 2 people (anything must be better than QF)? How about general availability? I have heard a rumour that their allocation could be less than what I can see on QFF. Some info/personal thoughts on this would be really appreciated before I purchase a few hundred thousand miles. Thank you!

I called AS on the toll free No. and found the operators very helpful even with my OZ accent!.

Like finding all award seats, AS is the same (with a bit less), still a lottery, you can however minimise this by doing some research on other sites for CX availability first, like BA, QF, CX and the like.

AS do not always have the found award seats as they only get an allocation. I did read the JAL site gives the bests CX allocation that's more in line with what AS really have but no tried it, but hey can ring toll free instead.

In my case I looked for J on CX Marco Polo site (free to join) for Sept next, not suitable, looked for May (yes May!), found 5 days!, called up AS they had 2 of those days, so booked!.

Arrrggh! I purchased a bunch of miles, it appeared to go through OK, then 2 days later I get an e-mail saying the purchase had failed.

I call customer care and they tell men that purchases can't be made except with a US or Canadian credit card. I queried it, she checked and confirmed - they can't do it over the phone with non US/Canuk cards. I was using a 28 Degree MC.

Did I miss this requirement?

At least you got an email. I purchased miles on Sunday, it appeared to be successful and since then nothing, no email, no miles. I guess I should give them a call.

Eek! this is going to put a big glitch in my plans! Can anyone else verify?

For the heck of it, I just tried again with a Visa (still an Oz card). Went through 'pending confirmation' (as before).

I noticed that when you fill out the "Billing Address" it has the option for 'Australia' as country and then it populates the 'state' field with Australian states.

So it APPEARS to contemplate an Australian billing address. (Can you have a US issued card with an Australian billing address?)

Will see what happens now.

Yes you can
But how to pay it is another story

When I've made US purchases I've had my NZ credit card refused. I've used Pay Pal and the purchase goes straight through and the charge still appears on my NZ credit card.

Had no issues using my CC, took round 24 hours for the miles to appear in my account but the payment went through almost instantly.

Thanks ledger. Would you mind saying what type of cc (Australian issued, I'm assuming), and when this was?

RooFlyer, it was a standard Westpac Mastercard, Aus issued. Paid for the miles last Friday, came into my account and got my email confirmation on Saturday and I booked the flights immediately.

FYI Alaskan booking agents CAN hold seats for 24 hours if your miles aren't immediately transferred to your account.
