Looking for advice on booking Fairmont Gold rooms in Canada...is the extra expense worth the benefits?

Is the complementary breakfast usually the same breakfast you get when you pay for breakfast in an ordinary room?

Could you be a bit more specific about which property you have in mind, as the quality of lounges will vary quite a bit between properties. For instance, the type of service you'll receive at the lounge at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is quite a bit different than that of the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour, despite the fact that they're both Sofitels in the same city.

Over the next year I may have the opportunity to go to the Vancouver, Banff, and Lake Louise Fairmonts

There should be plenty of reviews online of the lounges in these properties.

We are staying at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler in January and I was looking whether to book a gold room. In the end there wasn’t availability in a 2 queen room so was a moot point but cost would have been an extra $1,600 for 6 nights. Rooms were slightly better from what I could see. Rough estimate was that we would have saved just under $1,000 on breakfasts and lunches for the 3 of us. Didn’t really factor in the evening canapés because we would generally eat out. Alcohol in the gold lounge is NOT complimentary.

Canadian Fairmont hotels can be very large with vast numbers of guests so the Gold rooms and lounge access IMHO is well worth it rather than fighting the hoards over breakfast buffet, plus evening canopies and drinks are generally very good.

Have stayed at all those hotels and experience was great. I liked the PanPacific in Vancouver as modern with great views. Lake Louise is brilliant with great hikes and so many things to do there. Banff was also a great but I enjoyed the beauty of Lake Louise was better.
As all these hotels are expensive anyway ( and esp at Lake Louise where we wanted the best chance of a lake view) we opted for gold.
Worst part of the trip was Air Canada. Dreadful airline

Personally, lounges are rarely worth the extra cost. I can’t find value in the breakfasts which are usually more limited, or the canapés and the alcohol is usually quite low tier even if it’s included.
If it’s not too much more I’d consider asking the hotel whether they allow breakfast in the main restaurant, which is usually more expansive.
