Hi I have miles that expire at the end of February if I extend these by 6 months to which they then expire 31st August, if I book a flight say on 31st August what is the longest I have to actually fly?

Cheers

I have over 1 million points not all expiring end of February but a big chunk and more over the next 3 or so months.

I have found another post that indicated you could book a flight say on the 31st August when points expire (already extended) for the 31st August the following year and you still have a further 12 months to take the flight as it is vaild from the date of the first leg!! if this is correct you would in effect have 24 months, I know you would be up for change fees but if anyone can confirm that would be great.

Cheers

If you've got 1M, you couldn't just plan a holiday to use your expiring miles? :)

One possible issue is that they only release flight a maximum of 12 months in advance. Sometimes shorter, like 330 days in advance. So if you can book your first flight exactly 12 months out, you most likely won't have flights beyond that to also book.

You can canvas your friends to see who may be travelling and transfer points to them. They will love you long time.

This is only an issue if wanting a stopover enroute. If booking returns without stopovers, they can simply booked as separate one way bookings. So book both outbound and return 12 months away, and then at any time between now and then you can move that ticket further out (subject to availability), as the 12 months keep rolling, up to the maximum ticket validity (12 months from first date of travel, first time the ticket was issued). Date/time changes are free. Of course if wanting to cancel, points will not be refunded due to their expiry date. Not sure what would happen if wanting to re-issue (different destination/class).

Hi dajop

Thanks for the reply and info, just to confirm you are saying as if my already extended miles expire end of August 2013, I could say book a flight for June 2014 then change the date to say May 2015?

What about the return leg does that need to also be flown within the 12months? so return completed by end may 2015?

Cheers

I haven't experience of this, but I have heard about it second hand (so wouldn't take that necessarily as gospel). But the T&C clearly state ticket (if issued after 8 July 2012) is valid for 12 months from first original date of travel. Return would also have to be completed within 12 months of first date of travel on original ticket.

Key clauses are:

11. An award ticket may be reissued, but only for travel by the same person and provided no part of the award ticket has been utilised. Additional KrisFlyer miles may be applicable. If the new journey requires fewer KrisFlyer miles, the excess cannot be refunded. The award ticket at the point of reissue must still be valid. There will be a reissue fee for each ticket. The reissued ticket must have the same expiry date as the original ticket and it must be for the same airline. However, if the date of the first flight on the reissued ticket is earlier than that of the original ticket, then the expiry date of the reissued ticket will be readjusted to the earlier date accordingly

19. All award tickets are valid for six or twelve months from the date of the first flight as ticketed, unless otherwise specified.

Ok, so just short of one million points... my wife has just under 9000 and myself less than 4000 expiring this month. There's nothing I can really do with these is there (short of flying with them again to rack up more etc!)

If you leave it long enough they'll make your account inactive too!

Do they have an online shop ? I used some Etihad points, that were about to expire, to buy some merchandise
