This is a slight variant on the usual question of how the expiry of miles used to redeem reward flights is treated. I know that if you book a reward flight with points and then subsequently cancel that flight and the miles get redeposited into your account, that the expiry of the miles is still the same as the original(ie. not extended). My question is does it make a difference if points from a later batch with later expiry was actually used to redeem flights(and actually taken, not cancelled and refunded), do those points take the place of the miles to be expired? I'll try and explain the scenario as simply as I can, as I'm confusing myself just asking this
- I transfer 100,000 points to Krisflyer in Jan 2014. As per the programme, these points will expire in Jan 2017. Call this Batch A
- I then transfer a further 100,000 points to Krisflyer in Jan 2015. These points will expire in Jan 2018. Call this Batch B.
- In Jan 2016, I book a reward flight(Flight 1) for July 2016 that will cost 100,000 points. I'm assuming that they'll take the number of points from Batch A(as the oldest points).
- In Feb 2016, I book another reward flight(Flight 2) for Aug 2016, that will cost 100,000 points. Assuming that this will come from Batch B.
- In May 2016, I have to cancel Flight 1. This results in a refund of 100,000 points.
So which of the following scenarios is correct?
Scenario A - The refund of the 100,000 points will reappear back in the account as Batch A(expiring in Jan 2017) as this was the original Batch the points came from.
or
Scenario B - The refund of the 100,000 points will reappear back in the account as Batch B(expiring in Jan 2018) because the points for still existing Flight 2 is now considered to have come from Batch A
