Hi all,

I'm about to book some flights to Madrid and was wondering if anyone had any experience getting an exit row on EK? I am happy to pay for one on Qantas but understand that on all EK flights they can only be selected at the airport. Can I secure an exit row in MEL when I check in for my QF flight?

Current routing is QF to DXB then EK to MAD

No, they won't be available for selection to Qantas staff at all. What you can do though is, check-in for both the flights anyway then go to the Emirates check-in counter and speak to them about the connecting flight.

I believe only EK staff can allocate those seats. Besides the EK check-in counter staff you can also try asking the staff at the EK lounge.

Correct. I mentioned this to a friend and they duly presented themselves 3hrs and a bit before check-in (to be front of the queue). They asked for and were given exit rows all the way from Melbourne to Europe.

While it left them with a lot of time hanging around the airport they said it was absolutely worthwhile.

Sounds like a good strategy.

I have a couple of EK flights later this year and have pre-allocated 2nd row aisle but would be nice to try and get into exit row so as to not worry what the person in front is doing. Think I will have 3 hours transit in MEL and ~2 hours transit in SIN. Head straight to EK lounge each time.

I have also got to the airport at 3 hours prior to departure, and was successful with this approach.

Didn't think about it that much at the time but now I feel super lucky for last years Mel-CDG trip. My EK connection to paris and then return I was allocated exit for both flights without any requests at all (was connection from and to QF J so TBH I almost forgot about the EK legs) Seems like EK valueing QF flyers even at the time lowly Silver, more than QF...
