Expensive Flights OOL to MEL

Want to go to Melbourne this weekend from OOL or BNE (19 to 21 Aug) and flights are just under $1000 ... anyone know why?

Flights last minute are insane right now everywhere. This is not just an Australian domestic thing either (look at some fares in Europe right now).

That being said if you're a little flexible you can still get something reasonably priced.

OOL-MEL on VA is selling for $299 in the evening (~5pm or 7pm departure - but also worth noting business class is $349 on the 7pm flight so quite a good deal) and then return Rex on Sunday afternoon is $164. That is $463 return and about what I'd expect to pay for a last minute flight.

I sat next to someone in April who paid ~$2500 return for last minute Christchurch to Brisbane but when booking months out I recently for $208 OOL to CHC on a JQ return for free.

I'm wanting to go to the Collingwood V Carlton game on Sunday 21 Aug and need to return to GC Sunday night for work. The flights back MEL to OOL or BNE are ridiculous prices.

I guess it is just a last minute thing. There is a lot of capacity on MEL-OOL and booking a few weeks in advance it is pretty common to get the return cost down to about $250. I quite often see VA selling MEL-OOL at $79 a month out....business class at $299.

Also, if you're going to the footy you are limiting yourself to a very limited subset of the MEL-OOL flights that day e.g. departing around or after 7PM. VA has MEL-OOL at 1640 at $199...but that's no use to you.

My Son sold his Collingwood V Carlton tickets today online for $715 (paid $70) ...enough for a flight Brisbane to Melbourne return.

I’m back & forth between BNE or OOL & MEL every couple of weeks & found it changed about 4 weeks ago - maybe about the same time the flexibility to change flights ended?
