eVIP - multiple flights routings

Hi all

As I progress half way through the year and I look on my available eVIP balance and my lack of upgradeable flights my mind turns to getting a better understanding of the potential routings one might consider using one on.

I have had what seemed to me to be conflicting potential routes where you could utilise the maximum benefit.

I know that eVIPs can be used for 3 flights. The detailed terms and conditions are on aa.com and some extracts are here:

Systemwide Upgrade Terms and Conditions
• Upgrade entitles passenger to a one-way upgrade to the next class of service at no additional charge for travel on American Airlines to any American Airlines destination.
• This upgrade is subject to capacity controls and is limited to a single one-way trip with a maximum of three segments.
• Stopovers, joint and through fares are permitted if fare purchased allows.

What this doesnt define is routing.

For example people have said that nrt-dfw-jfk-lhr is ok but nrt-ord-jfk-lhr is not ok.

Is there any clear explanation of the potential routings?

What is allowed is 3 sectors in a one way journey

With normal round-trip tickets, it becomes quite straightforward normally what classes as one way. With ATW tickets, which I guess you are using, they are more complicated ime

If upgrading 3 consecutive sectors of an ATW trip, it is ime pretty simple in that as long as you do not pass through the same airport twice

If upgrading non-consective sectors, then they work out whether the split sectors are in the same direction geographically

If upgrading from economy to business, I would expect both routings to be possible. If upgrading from business to 1st , then given that the middle sector isn't being upgraded, then it comes down to the working out whether it is still one way

Stopovers have no impact. As long as the fare allows stopovers, they are ok
