I haven’t watched the video but the description above suggests the door wasn’t yet armed and the passenger took it upon himself to open the door? :(

That article does say that. It also says "Firefighters were not called to the tarmac during the incident." when in fact at least 3 units were on the tarmac.

Yeah right, there was enough panic just sitting on the ground. Not sure what phone, but people in the terminal were saying it was plugged into a portable phone charger.
 
Yeah, some big carry-ons amongst that lot.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were some prosecutions, well advertised. ( Assuming the FAs were calling instructions).

Let me see if I've got this right.
Aircraft fully fueled and ready to depart.
Fire source identified on aircraft by smoke/smell etc.
Slides deployed (by someone) and passengers evacuate.
THEN EVERYONE STANDS AROUND WATCHING!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, but I'd have been making some space between the plane and myself fairly quickly.
Yes, I know someone said someone put the fire out, but I'd still be out of there.

I too question whether an evacuation command by the crew was actually given. Reason being, why weren’t the overwing exits used? The checklist on the 737 calls for the flaps to be run to 40° so that when the overwings are used, people will slide down the trailing edge of the flaps and jump off. Flaps are still in the up position on the video.
 
I hope it's not too early to post this but I heard the reason they deployed the chutes was that nobody had paid the surcharge to use the stairs.
 
Difficult issue. One day a passenger initiated evacuation might be the thing that saves lives.

I expect there have been many passenger/cabin crew initiated evacuations. Once the crash is over (BA's 777, or Asiana), then it's a pretty obvious thing to be doing. On the other hand, passengers opening a door into fire, because they were never trained to check, or charging out into a still running engine, is bound to put a dampener on proceedings.
