EU bans Pakistan airline flights

The European Union has barred most of the planes of Pakistan International Airlines from flying to the 27-nation bloc because of safety concerns.

The ban affects 35 of the airline's fleet of 42 aircraft, with just seven Boeing 777s exempted.

This will be a nightmare for anyone planning a trip to Europe on PIA. And it will be interesting to see if other countries follow suit, or will they be able to rotate their EU-banned aircraft through other destinations?

I am not surprised. It was 4 years ago I flew with them once from Karachi to Lahore and never, never again. If I could have got off I would have.

This news came out a couple of weeks ago IIRC. By some accounts PIA was lucky to be allowed to operate any a/c into EU.

Really would anybody from Australia for example even consider such an airline these days ? Do you think anybody will really notice.

Of course maybe for all i know they are popular but i had hardly heard of them before. I had heard they were considering 747-8's to replace there old B742's and B743's, i think even these got banned by the working in the story.

Some people will consider the cheapest option. And an airline with this type of regulatory problems will often release bargain fares to try to build volume. Part of the process of determining the value of a deal is to be informed about factors that may be influencing the pricing structure. Hence this information may be of interest to some people here.

There have been plenty of suggestions on this site for people to find the cheapest flights to Europe to use a cheap Aus-Asia fare (e.g. Tiger) and then a cheap Asia-Europe fare, and its quite likely that once PIA clears their backlog of delays, they may well be offering some of the cheapest Asia-Europe fares available. Be informed and make you own judgements regarding the value of airfares available.

Also of interest as this might impact other airlines and other cheap fares - if you take out a chunk of vailability through restricting one airline - everyone else might jack up prices to make the most of it.

Perhaps, and as I believe they were the launch customer for their version of the 777, I would be quite happy to fly on one of these new aircraft, with no more concerns about safety than if flying QF!

PIA took delivery of the first two 777-200LR aircraft made by Boeing. They were the two aircraft used by Boeing for their type certification. Here is a photo of one of the PIA 777-200LR aircraft before it was delivered to them, still in Boeing House livery at the 2005 Paris Air Show.

In addition to the two 777-200LR aircraft, they also have three 777-200ER (plus one leased) and three 777-300ER (two delivered and one still on order) aircraft, all delivered in the last 5 years.
