eSims, what is your experience.

Has anyone had any experience with the xe.com eSIM offering? I’m interested to give it a go, but they seem a bit coy about their pricing structure (which puts me off). I might be missing something, but I can’t see anything on pricing on the website.

I couldn’t get past logging in - don’t think I’ve ever registered!

Meanwhile, for those using Frewie, they’re still doing the US$1 / 1GB / 7d promos. But in another quirk of the sh$tty app, you might get different pricing doing a regular search v clicking thru on the $1 promo button - as I just found buying an NZ plan - save US$0.10….

My only international (roaming) eSIM experiences have been freebies. First was Klook. Second was Singapore Airlines. Make a booking, even a waitlisted one, and they give you a free eSIM. Great for the 3 days of travel getting to my final destination, where I can then use a local eSIM much more cheaply than topping up the free one. (My waitlist never came through, so I wasn't even flying on SQ at all.)

As always.. it depends
Most of the travel eSIMS are generally good for up to about 2GB a day.
Above that you probably want an eSIm or actual SIM from a Kiwi MVNO.

I would also add, depends on where you are/will be and what telco the eSiM roams on.

If I recall Spark had the best coverage across urban and rural areas, so if doing a road trip, you want one that connects to Spark. If just in AKL or urban areas, then probably less important.

Then how much daily data you actually need? I tend to use twice as much as SYd+1 but that’s 500MB to 1GB pw (I don’t need to be streaming videos or FaceTiming on roaming data).

As above, 1GB/US$1/7d (and multiplies thereof) is hard to beat TBH. Saves stuffing around trying to find a local SIM. Unless, you absolutely need a local number and calls / text.
