eSims, what is your experience.

Hi all

Travelling to WA next week and looking at Airalo for data SIM.

Does anyone have a referral code so they can get a bit back?

Does anyone have any experience with using Frewie in Japan? Found a blog that says it roams across the 3 or 4 majors networks within Japan, so wondered if that might be handy when travelling out of the big cities (eg Takayama, north of Nagoya) or whether it might be too good to be true.

Have a look here

Did anyone else get the 'We're upgrading your SIM" e-mail from Flexiroam?

They are changing their service provder (to Optus, locally 🤣 ) calling it 'Webbing'.

They are supplying a new eSIM, so you have to delete your current one and install the new one that's in 'Manage my SIMs' in their app.

Minor issue for me is that there are two there; different ID numbers. Also, co-incidence or not, my purchased but not yet activated Sth American plan also shows up as duplicate.

Have an e-mail query into them.

Yes, received the email but I’d already received the new eSIM to fix another issue (mentioned upthread).

They’re going back to their old system of one eSIM that you can link/load various Local, Regional and a Global plan simultaneously (rather than 1ea eSIM per plan - which I thought was a bit naff). Their system should be smart enough to use your available plans in sequence: Local -> Regional -> Global last.

Yes, I wondered about the new-eSIM-each time thing.

Hopefully they'll figure out which of the 2 new ones they have delivered I should use (and why my plan is duplicated ...)

I did an online chat. They were reasonably quick. I believe you can delete all old eSIMs and just use the latest one. It ought to be linked to all current and future plans.

Did anyone see the eSim offer on Ozbargain today
Free $10 Credit (Data) for eSim (47 Countries) @ Roamless.com via Google Play Store/ Apple App Store

Seems like a newish provider trying to get some traction

Stumbled on these Airalo plans for Thailand that actually include calls and text, as well as data. Quite good value!

By way of comparison, my FLX 3GB/8d plan was about US$9 after MC discount. But no calls/txt.

Anyone tried amaysim adding on international roaming ? I am not an existing customer but would purchase for a couple of months and add the international roaming onto it.
I am a tad stressed about trying to set it up when I land in USA and would like it all working before I leave

Unfortunately my usual Mobal sim did not arrive on time for my Japan trip so will be tryin Ubigo.. seems like it installed easy enough; will update with coverage etc when I arrive in a day or so.

2deg gets the thumbs down on 2nd visit with it on esim bought from my other trip.
First visit use was great.
Bought the esim from either simdirect or simcorner.
Now even with online recharge with NZ$20 it still shows question mark and won't bring up 2 deg signal.
---
Using hotel wifi, not ideal.

Checkout local NZ data plans on Airalo, Flexiroam and Truphone etc. Much the much if just after data. Easy to install and use.

Used MobiMatter last night. They're reselling a 3 HK eSIM that cover Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, 15GB for 30 days for US$10.
Worked flawlessly on my S23 Ultra. It did take about 5 mins before it found and engaged with the network when I landed in Singapore but other than that its totally smooth, no issues at all. I'm here for a week and then up to Thailand.

Turns out after topping up 2deg, you have to log into your 2deg account, need wifi or log in from Aust, and specifically (Use Credit) to buy a 2deg data pack.
Just topping up only from their website or from a 2deg reseller ie diary does not work.
Just discovered their double step process.
Have turned hotel wifi off, and Aust mobile has been off since I left, yesterday, and am able to type this.
Spent NZ$50 to learn a lesson.
But their $10 with 2deg credit last a year, then can buy $10 from a diary, giving 1gb good for a week.
So hard.

Will check Airalo if I loose this 2deg number.
Thanks for the feedback tho.

Ill also give a recommendation to bnesim.com

Who my folks used for recent Europe travel.
Was one of the few that covered Switzerland and is particularly cheap for low data.
(Currently under 1€ for 30 days/ 1GB.. plenty if you have hotel Wifi and basically just use maps and email)

Got an app for iPhone that can auto install Sim.

Just be careful of auto renewal.

I've also previously used Flexiroam with an actual SIM card before they offered eSim.

It's ASX listed albeit a Aust / Malay company.
