EPIC files lawsuit to suspend airport body scanner use

Interesting comment on a US blog site-

Money, or course. It seemed that way from the little bit that I know. It seemed that they were interested in pushing through the scanners without justifying the benefit. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to justify but all I heard was the dose is so low that it isn't worth doing the justification. Easy to suspect there is more to the story when people refuse to follow the correct process.

Should be interesting tomorrow (24/11/10) as it's "National Opt Out Day".

Things are really going off the richter at the moment in the USA. In FT, there are stories of kids getting molested by the TSA, women with prosthetic breasts being humiliated and so on.

You're not kidding! It's on *every* news channel and media outlet here. Its a huge uproar ever since the leaked photos made it online despite the TSA claiming they never got stored.

At MIA this morning, it was the same as yesterday. Premium queue = metal detector. Regular queue = nude-o-scope (like that name!).

They've picked the 24th as the day of action as mentioned. Im flying out of LAX that morning so it'll be fun to see how bad it is (to LAS).

So far, no scanners or pat downs for me. That said i probably just jinxed myself!

It's taken the American people some time to wake up and realise that all of this indignity isn't really helping and that the TSA has gone off the rails. Hopefully this backlash will be severe enough to result in some solid action, but I'm a little sceptical that it'll be any significant action. Still, we can live in hope...

It's certainly be an entertaining few weeks for editorial cartoonists.

The pic below, I found in the FT thread, The Pictures are Coming Out.
Can anyone ID the three security errors made by the TSA staffers in the pic?

This one is interesting too.

NO BLASTERS! – Page 1
This is interesting, but I think I might be missing something. I've only been to the US once (SFO) in 2009 and I don't remember being asked to go through any security at all on arrival. Immigration -> Bag Claim -> Customs -> Exit.
Maybe I've forgotten something...

The article suggests the re-screening is required at that particular airport because in order to exit the airport the passengers must re-enter the secure part of the terminal after collecting their bags.

All I got is the passenger is carrying a naked flame. The spikey head dress?

Partially correct, medhead. Don't forget that extinguished, the torch could still be used as a blunt trauma weapon, same as a truncheon.
The spiked headdress is a stabbing and puncture weapon.

Wild Stab, but she still has her shoes on?

Yes mannej, that is indeed another of the 3 mistakes.

The third, which was not spotted by others, is that she still has personal belongings in her left hand. The book. That should be on the x-ray belt.

Gotta say one of my biggest problems with airport security is that I can take on a bottle of rum or whiskey or etc., which is first a blunt trauma weapon and then can become a cutting weapon. In fact, I've even carried on a dozen empty beer bottles. All good as long as I don't have nail clippers.

The shoes I discounted as they look thong like, but I guess they are made from copper. As is her cloak. :D
