Qantas has expanded its pre-purchased Additional Baggage Allowance product. Customers will now be able to purchase up to 5 additional pieces of baggage online at qantas.com at any point from the time of booking, up until 3 hours prior to departure.

The product has also been extended to include journeys both to and from Japan, and is now available for any domestic or international Qantas operated service booked as a QF flight number, provided the passenger is not connecting on the same-day to a flight operated by another carrier.

The rates for pre-purchased additional baggage are lower than airport excess baggage charges and Qantas Frequent Flyers can pay using points. For more information Click here

If I have a connecting flight (both QF, same itinerary) is the excess baggage charge applied just once? eg PER-SYD-DFW would be $90 per piece or $110?

It should be for the entire journey, and will be just the international rate.

If it's not a stopover and only a transit then it's charged once at the higher rate (international rate). I recently asked this question and the response was as long as it's not a stopover and it's on the one PNR it's only charged once.
