Just ran into this while checking my flight this week:

Welcome to Emirates

The queues are going to be amazing if everyone's going to have to switch on their 1-3 (or more) devices...

This isn't limited to DXB, as there are a number of other airports introducing this measure (LHR pops up to mind).

Of course, mannej – but this notification is about DBX.

All those travelling to USA, Canada and the UK are required to switch on their electronic devices at the Dubai International airport or risk being denied access to fly. Please ensure that your electronic devices have sufficient power before reaching the airport. This is part of enhanced security measures required by the authorities of these countries.

I'm flying to LHR and onwards after DXB, so it'll be interesting to see how it's handled. I just hope I don't miss any flights because of security issues at DXB and LHR.
Fingers crossed.

Just another 'method' that terrorists use to 'control us', by constantly instilling 'fear' into our world, through 'the potential for terrorism', damaging the fabric of civilized societies, and then those terrorists 'sit back and watch/revel' in how we end up turning on eachother because of the disruptions it creates to our trips/lives (by blaming airlines/security agencies etc etc etc )...Sadly, for as long as there are humans with intent to harm other humans, there will be terrorism in many ways/shapes/forms....it has just become a sad 'fact of life'

The checking process is random, not every passenger, as per the info from QF:

Enhanced Security Measures for Passengers Flying to the UK and the USA 11 July 2014

Passengers flying to the UK

The UK Government has introduced a range of additional security measures at the boarding gate for flights into the UK.

Customers travelling on flights from Dubai to the UK who are randomly selected to undergo additional screening may be required to remove footwear and from hand luggage all electrical equipment including portable electronic devices such as laptops, iPads, smart phones, and cameras larger than a standard mobile phone and power up the device to demonstrate functionality.

Passengers are advised to ensure that their electronic devices are charged before travel. Devices that do not power on may not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

Further information is available at the UK DFT website -https://www.gov.uk/government/news/aviation-security-update

Passengers flying to the USA

The Transport Security Administration in the United States have implemented enhanced security measures at select overseas airports with direct flights to the U.S.

While Qantas flights to the U.S. are not currently impacted, passengers with an onward connection from an airport where the enhanced security measures apply may be required to comply with the additional screening:

Passengers are being advised to ensure that all their electronic devices, such as mobile phones, iPads, tablet and laptop computers, are charged before they travel for testing and inspection prior to boarding.
Devices that do not power on may not be permitted onboard the aircraft.
Passengers should also allow additional time for security screening.
