From 4 December, Emirates will fly daily from DXB to KBL and return, using a 3 class A340.

Emirates to commence daily service to Kabul | News | Emirates United Kingdom

Currently, its 'low cost' subsidiary FZ operates three return flights daily. The timings suggest the EK flights might replace one of the FZ flights, although FZ is still offering 3 flights daily after the change.

This comes against a backdrop of a KBL to anywhere market that has been shrivelling over the past 12 months with the steady reduction in aid - military and otherwise.

The advantage that 'foreign' airlines like FZ, TK, and :shock:AI have here is that some contractors, embassies, etc won't let anyone fly with the Afghan carriers (4Q, RQ and FZ) as they are banned from EU airspace, because of the inadequate regulatory oversight of these. This gives EK a walk-up start.

Interesting that they are targeting an F class market with these flights. There are certainly a few with a lot of money here. And the flight is commencing at the same time that FZ is rolling out its own J class

The other oddity was the choice of aircraft - an A340 for a 3 hour flight. I for one will give that a go! With all their A380s coming on stream, presumably EK would have a few A340s spare now.

Would be nice to see a QF codeshare on the KBL EK flights, which if so would become the only OW flights into KBL, but I'm not holding my breath.

Cheers skip.

What other aircraft would you use considering EK is all widebody?

Maybe it will be carrying sufficient fuel for the return flight so no refuelling will be neccessary at Kabul...

You'd think each of the aircraft type in the EK fleet could do the return easily

What a ridiculous suggestion! Why would QF codeshare to a destination the Australian Government instructs its citizens not to travel to?

Maybe QF should be considering daily direct A380 flights SYD-SDA?!

Why is it ridiculous, it would get rid of the need to have an A340 flying there every week ex Brisbane.

Nevertheless a large number of Australian citizens do travel to KBL and even between DXB and KBL. I'm pretty keen to do this flight, especially if I can earn points on a QF codeshare.

Has anyone suggested a direct flight SYD-KBL?

Quick, someone write to Joyce about it, maybe we can put him on the inaugural flight... :)

Just did a quick search ADL-KBL $17000 return in Y and B classes. For Jan using Ita matrix.

Sounds cheap at twice the price... Where do i sign up...

Wonder what the travel insurance premium would be as well, probably about the same as the air fare... :)

Here's 4Q's choice, parked at DXB

Good point implied, is EK not well set up for short haul?

Dunno. Not a problem getting fuel, we have 'all mod cons' in KBL, not enough airbridges, squillions of helos, and LOTS of security checks:cool:, see Flight from Kabul through security check central | Pineapple blog

What a ridiculous suggestion! Why would QF codeshare to a destination the Australian Government instructs its citizens not to travel to?

Because those that come often get paid ridiculous money:D, a lot are on FIFO, and there are quite a few of them here. But I don't expect the codeshare!

BTW the UK FCO advises against all but essential travel to KBL. I think the travel advice is largely aimed at tourists and casual business travellers, you wouldn't come here in your right mind unless you had appropriate security measures in place. For example those citizens working in the Australian Embassy.

Haha there is no premium! if you find a travel insurer that will cover you for a holiday to a 'do not travel' destination, let me know!
Its pretty standard to have cover through your contractor or employer, that includes war cover and act of terrorism cover. No doubt it's hideously expensive.
