The Victorian Supreme Court is hearing a case where a woman on a flight from Melbourne to Dubai suffered a broken ankle after feinting because of a lack of water.

While reading the story I was shaking my head. Something's not right in the story, or somewhere. The accident itself was regrettable but the leadup and consequences have more (or less) to them than what's told.

I find it very hard to believe that this woman was unable to get more than one glass of water on a 15-hour flight from MEL to DXB. How hard is it to walk to the galley and ask for one? It's not as if Emirates is a low-cost carrier and charges money for water.

I also find it hard to believe that not drinking water for a few hours led to the woman's marriage breakdown etc. The whole lawsuit seems rather opportunistic.

She drinks an "awful lot of water"..the whole 2 litres a day?

I have never been refused taking my water bottle on a plan... Just empty it before security and refil before getting on..then you have ample water.

If you get to the stage you are so dehydrated you faint it prob not due to only having 1 glass of water at the beginning of her flight...appears she fainted earlish in the flight...as she had water for the remainder.

On the marriage side.. you husband is unhappy you can't clean (domestic duties)) because of an injury he's probably a jerk and you don't need to be married to him anyway.

She continued on with her holiday with a broken ankle that was not diagnosed until she returned to Melbourne?

This was widely reported by many news outlets, not just SMH. The facts of the case are the same, regardless of where you read the story.

Indeed - the same story has been posted on both news.com.au and The Guardian. I guess one could say all of them are just in it for "a good story" and don't care about the truth, but if that's the case, you're saying that most of the major media outlets in Australia (News Corp, Fairfax and The Guardian) chase good stories at the expense of the truth.

I am afraid these days none of them really care about the truth.
A tiny smidgin of honesty would have asked why the woman didn't use the call button and ask for more water.
Sorry but entirely her own fault if indeed the faint was due to lack of water.

I can sort of understand where this is possible especially if she had not flown much and didn't know there was a fountain.

I flew this same airline in Y - MEL-KUL-DBX in 2014.

On each sector, immediately after the meal service lights off and the cabin crew disappeared from the cabin and no water was served until just before landing, the toilets were not cleaned, some of the toilets had no toilet paper, the cabin crew couldn't give a sh..

Not sure if it was the same flight, but definitely Emirates, where a member of the cabin crew got a large number of paper cups out of storage and dropped them on the floor on the way back to the gallery.

They separated out into a number of groups and rolled half way back through the cabin along the floor.

She ran down the cabin picking them up and took them to the galley (opposite me) where she starting putting them out onto a tray and proceeded to start filling them with water and juice.

I approached her and said they are not suitable for use as they have been on the floor. I was ignored.

Another passenger complained and got no response.

Then another passenger found the purser and came back with him. After some discussion in Arabic, the cups were put into waste and more clean ones were sourced.

That deserved photos posted on FB.

So, going barefoot should be fine then?

Seriously? What about the 5 second rule? Sounds really wasteful to me, do you really believe those cups would be carrying significantly more bacteria that you are sucking into your lungs in an airplane?

Oh!

Plane carpet. Several years old. Several thousand passengers shoes per week. Sector cycles through multiple countries throughout Asia and Africa.

I'll have a clean cup thanks.

since no security guards are going to punch you in the face anymore, I guess fainting and injuring yourself is the next best thing. I would've chosen a more visible part of the body personally. Garner much more sympathy that way.

Absolutely! Those hot towels they hand out from time-to-time, great for wiping down the toes-ies. Or, a quick visit to KFC to load up on those wonderful sachets-of-(anti)septic-secureness. Of course that in itself is wasteful really, maybe just a bit of spit and a good wipe-down with the in-flight blanket

Ok, wipe the toes with the non existent hot towels and blankets in Y and then put said 'clean' feet on bulkhead. Got it.

Not sure of the merits of her case but I can empathise. Jetstar has refused me water on an international flight.
