Hi all,
I just ticked over to KF Elite Silver yesterday, after the outbound sectors of a recent rtn trip to EU took me from about 18k to about 30k Elite Miles. That was nice obviously, but I was shocked to discover that at the same time my Elite Miles balance was reduced to zero. My membership year runs from September to August, AFAIK. I had assumed that on attaining Silver, my Elite Miles tally would stay as it is, and if went on to reach 50,000 Elite Miles prior to the end of August next year, I'd attain Gold. As the return flights from my recent trip have yet to credit, I expected to be sitting on about 42k Elite Miles, meaning Gold was only 8k Elite Miles away and likely to be achieved with my next *A intl flight. However, now it looks like Gold is still 38k Elite Miles away (after the outstanding flights credit). That could very well be the difference between making Gold during this membership year or staying on Silver.

Is this correct? If so, in effect it would mean that you need to amass a minimum of 75K Elite Miles to go from the basic tier to Gold, but in practice even more (as they seem to wipe your balance back to zero when you get Silver and you're unlikely to qualify for Silver by attaining exactly 25k miles).

I searched through this forum and found a similar question from a few years back: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....sflyer/sq-kris-flyer-gold-status-24729-2.html

According to that thread, you do just need to get 50k Elite Miles in a year (not achieve silver and then get another 50k). However, what troubles me is that when I check my KF account online, it clearly states the foloowing:

Elite miles 0
To qualify for Elite Gold: 50,000
Additional Elite miles you need to re-qualify for Elite Silver : 25,000

I have been KF Silver before, but I don't remember my Elite Miles being scrubbed to zero like this in the past. Although maybe I just wasn't paying attention, as I probably wasn't quite as obsessed back then :)

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I think the issue is with that darned misbehaving website.
I'd give it a few more days to see if it sorts itself out, then give KF a call.
If the agent has NFI, do HUACA or speak to a supervisor.
Might be worth asking when your membership anniversary date is.

Hopefully you're right! It has actually got worse, as now the additional 12k miles for my flights back have credited, but my Elite Miles are still showing as zero! That can't be correct. I'll maybe give them a call next week.

I think I know what NFi means, but HUACA?

I'm pretty certain it's September, and I've earned over 42,000 Elite Miles since the start of October this year, so unless it really is necessary to get 25k +50k, I should be well placed to attain Gold.

Hang up and call again. But be nice and say "thank you. I will look at the web site" or simlar weasel words. If you are unlucky the same person can answer your next call

Ah! Thanks for the clarification! Even urbandictionary.com didn't help me work that out!

A similar thing happened to my husband who is KF Gold. Up to a few days ago he had 58,261 elite miles. This morning he received an e-mail that his KF gold has been renewed for another year; upon checking the balance of elite miles online, it has been reset to zero. So, 8,261 miles gone, wiped out by the system? Have contacted SQ via their online form and are waiting. Lets' see what they say.

I had a similar situation recently. Their website is very confusing with the re-setting of elite miles once you hit a membership level. I emailed support and a few back-n-forths to have them explain it, even still it is easier to add-up your elite miles manually to keep track of where you are.
For instance after hitting Silver, my miles 'reset' to 50k remaining, even thou it should be 25k to gold. The support emails confirmed this but didn't explain why the website shows differently.

Been like this for over 2 years.
I qualified for Silver in June 2011 and it did the same. 25k miles later and I qualified for Gold automatically even thought the website was incorrect.

So the good news is I got an e-mail back from the KrisFlyer people confirming that it's just a website issue, consistent with what people said above, and that I definitely need only an additional ~7k Elite Miles to get to Gold.

The bad news is, they said I need to get those additional Elite miles by 30 April 2014. I'm now 100% certain that I originally signed up for KrisFlyer in September, so I thought that was when my membership year ended. So I'm wondering if my membership year is now based on when I last attained Silver? Funnily enough, I don't think that was April either, I think it was early March! Anyway, hopefully it won't matter much as I think I should make Gold before the end of April.

Isn't just easier to get *G using Aegean?

Yes but that doesn't get you lounge access with VA. Additionally, Aegean miles are nowhere near as valuable as KF miles, and KF status allows me to earn more KF miles when I fly *A.

Yes Aegean is the best to get *G, but their customer support and use of the miles is horrible

Glad to hear it's sorted out, and congrats on achieving *G soon.
I think 30 April comes into play because at some stage in your membership you hit Silver on or around that date.
With KF there are, one could say, 2 counters:
one keeping track of your membership year, which is the anniversaries of the date you actually joined KF,
and another hidden counter which keeps track of the elite miles accrued, based on the date that you achieve Elite status.
So because in an earlier year you achieved Silver on 30 April,
going forward this hidden counter is tracking all your Elite miles accrued in the preceding year up to 30 April every year.
It's one of the quirks of KF.
