I'm looking to book EK Econ next year SYD-DXB-MAD

I have a few miles on EK but not enough to upgrade the whole route to Biz.

Can I:

  1. Make the booking and once done, either as part of the booking process or later, just upgrade the DXB-MAD sector?
  2. or make two separate bookings. SYD-DXB and DXB-MAD upgrading the second sector? Given there will only be 2 hours between flights I'm just concerned about the luggage making it to the flight. And I suppose booking separate sectors might cost more?

Any advice most appreciated.

You can upgrade each sector individually. Please see AFF article re this;

Only 1 booking is required, and 2 hours is more than enough time for connection in Dubai. There is no need to worry about your bags if you’re travelling on the 1 booking, if your connection is missed, which would require a significant delay from your 1st flight, they will rebook you on the next flight.
Depending on how far you book in advance, what time of the year you are going and what kind of ticket you book, it is generally very hard to find any classic reward bookings on emirates. My advice would be to book a full flex ticket, and try and upgrade the Syd-dxb sector for 70000 miles, most likely at check in counter. If you are wanting to upgrade dxb-mad, it can only be done if theres availability (extremely rare) or from one of the ticket desks when you’re in transit in Dubai.
