But if a flight is fully booked, doesn't that mean a certain proportion of passengers must have booked Flex fares (as they would be the only fares left once the flight is almost full) and therefore would now have priority, even if they don't have any status?

Actually one of the reasons why EK y class is always full is because they'll sell cheap fare buckets to do it if they have to. Ive seen flights available last minute at the cheapest price even when Y class is under 9 available.

Re: Upgrade Fairy today

That is the age old question. Who is more loyal? Or maybe a better revenue earner? Expensive infrequent flyer or regular cheapie one?

If you consider Qantas domestic fares, I'd guess a flexi is worth 3 or 4 red-e-deal bookings in terms of potential margin. I don't look at international fares that often, but ISTR flexi will be about double the cheapest fare available.

One could assume that - but with EK they don't follow those rules and love to fill every seat, even if that comes through operational upgrades through overselling Y in the QTY of how many spare seats they have left in J or F.

EK don't sit on their last 20% of seats requiring anyone wanting them to buy the most flexible ticket as most airlines do. They seem to monitor all flights on a daily basis and make more inventory in certain buckets to be available on a daily basis, with a lot of management in the 5 days prior to a flight - and will do what they need to do to fill the plane. 4 days out you might find only a flexi seat free, but 2 days out they might open up a saver seat or two - and I still find I get Oped up.

Well that is what I have noticed in my hours of watching flights.

The person who doesn't fly often doesn't create the demand.

Precisely!
EK know how to manage inventory very well to ensure Maximum pax loads on each flight. whilst it might be standard industry practice, EK go over and beyond overselling the Y cabin by higher than 20 pax on an A380 for example.
This wont change anytime soon.

On QF8405 on sunday 11/9 booked in Y.

Currently 30 odd J seats free, 8 F seats, and 1 Y seat left. I'm a QF WP, so like my chances. Come on upgrade fairies!

I'm QF plat. Received op up from J to F on QF404 (Friday 9/9) - D bucket fare. Skywards plat in the boarding queue behind me didn't get upgraded. Apparently the flight was over sold by 30 in Y - lots were receiving new boarding passes.

Having been skywards WP, I can testify that they get treated very badly. QF WPs get far better treatment.

Why do you think that is? How many WP Sky versus Qantas I wonder. It was suggested once I might like to venture to skywards but that was actually a paid-for F fare on a NZ sale.

Not always the case.

Had my first EK economy flight 2 days ago.

- No special on board greeting. I don't really care but have read many reports this happens regularly
- Crew handing out BKK arrivals forms before take-off and I was missed
- CSM following behind them greeting specific passengers handing out arrivals forms and premium lane cards. Walks straight past me
- Asked a crew member for arrivals card and premium lane card. She came around later with arrival form and then CSM came around to offer greeting and premium lane card. If I didn't say anything I would have been missed.

Are you EK WP? If not it's a non sequitur...

I am QF WP. The first time I flew EK was in J and received no special attention. However every time since I have been treated like a long lost friend.

QF WPs get far better treatment. I don't think so.
You can "think" wherever you wish. The point of AFF is first hand experiences. Being both EK WP and QF WP, that's 'our' experience. When you have been EK WP you can perhaps give us yours rather than just comment?

Pretty underwhelming experience on EK DXB-SYD A380 yesterday. Flight oversold in all but F, op-ups done and checked my seat assignment 9A that morning. I selected this seat a couple of months previously on the EK website after booking.
Upon arrival at F check-in I'm handed a BP for 26D.
WTF!!! I realize seat assignments don't form part of the conditions of carriage but seriously ???
Single traveller on revenue J booked as QF codeshare.
I politely declined 26D and showed the agent a screen shot of my selected seat.
A phone call was placed to the Supervisor and fortunately I got my 9A seat back.

I know others have had good experiences with EK but I'm not one of them and I'm reluctant to choose the EK codeshare flights again.

Not good. Especially for a P1.

I also don't love the EK J seats. Quite narrow IMO. Love F though ðŸ
