Emirates will launch a new fifth-freedom route from Dubai to Mexico City via Barcelona in December.

This route has had a few false starts with EK initially failing to secure daily slots at MEX and Aeromexico placing political pressure on Emirates to cancel its plans to fly to Mexico.
Apparently the 777-200LR cannot fly MEX-DXB non-stop with a full load because the runway at MEX is too short for the airport's high altitude. Hence the stop in BCN.
