Someone at QF has to ask why they can only operate three international services a week from ADL when EK are looking to operate seven per week using a larger three class aircraft.

Is this really a case of QF believing SYD is the only city that exists in Australia?

Too late now. EK daily. SQ 10x weekly. CX daily (albeit via MEL in one dirn)

Good to see ADL is being served by EK. Whilst not daily I am very sure it will soon. The timing of flights are interesting. I thought there is a curfew in ADL from 11pm. They are cutting it fine.

No. It's a case of QF not having an intermediate hub, and ADL not supporting enough direct services.

Finally! Great for Adelaide. ADL must be pretty handy to connect through given the single-terminal concept I'd imagine, so maybe an easy option from MEL in case they offer some attractive introductory fares.

The only thing that wonders me - a 77W is a lot of capacity to start with in a rather small market like Adelaide. Wouldn't a 345 or 77E have been the better choice?

It may be a matter of available aircraft....

I dont think they will have an issue, must be a lot of ADL folk that would like one hop to Europe that does not involve singapore.

I still wonder why QF seem to struggle internationally out of PER.

EK 19 services, SQ bringing larger aircraft into PER, MH updating their product into PER same as NZ.

Because the only 1 stop is to FRA or LHR.

EK/SQ can one stop to many many more places.

That is not the sole reason. Timing wise QF isn't that great either.

It is a pity, because QF can do PER-LHR fairly quickly. Seems to be every where else they are lacking.

I'm originally from Adelaide and the international services have always been a joke despite the fact ADL is arguably the best airport in Australia. There is a billboard inside the airport that proudly boasts 'you can now fly direct from Adelaide to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Auckland and Denpasar'.

That's it.

Auckland is, I think, once a week, Hong Kong is via MEL and Denpasar is not daily. Not exactly a plethora of choices. When flying East (i.e. the Americas and the Pacific) it's a given in Adelaide you will probably transit through Sydney. When I was a kid flying QF ADL-LHR, naturally QF routed us through SYD. In terms of population, PER is not that much bigger than ADL and ADL likes to think theyre pretty much on par with PER in a lot of things but PER has what, 3 times the number of intl flights and destinations that ADL does?

When heading to Europe or North Asia, the SQ daily (going to double daily) is EXTREMELY popular in ADL and Im guessing this is what the Emirates decision was based on. Adelaidians dont like transiting through SYD anymore than anyone else does.

However, the flight timings seem bizarre. ALL international flights (except the additional SQ daily) arrive early/mid morning and depart late morning/early afternoon. It's rare to see an international plane after 3pm. I'm certain the airport curfew is currently 10.30pm. I assume given the SA government paid Emirates to come to Adelaide they are giving some leniency with the curfew but even if they extended the curfew to 11.30pm (which given it would be extended to accommodate the take off of the largest aircraft to ever operate flights from ADL would anger local residents!), a 46 minute delay would mean they miss curfew. Not to mention keeping the entire airport open for 1 flight (I believe the final domestic flight each day is the 9.30 JQ to MEL?). It's great for locals because it means they can work that day then catch the last flight out of ADL to DXB and I'm sure there is a rational connection reason for such a late departure but surely a 7pm arrival - 9pm departure giving them a few hours of 'fat' to play with for the curfew would have been far more logical? That being said, EK have operated their 2.40am MEL-DXB for years. I can't think of a worse flight time but I guess theres a reason why it still operates.

I think the Emirates flight will be very popular with Adelaidians going to Europe (like my parents who currently fly Emirates from ADL via PER or MEL). I guess for incoming tourists they would be connecting mainly from Europe - SA's only real tourism is wine and I can't imagine UAE Muslim's coming half-way across the globe to indulge in that....

Some of EK's timings (eg. 240am ex-MEL) is to allow for the connections to EU in DXB. I wonder if this flight in ADL is also being timed to allow EU connections (albeit a longer stopover than the MEL 240am flight). Slot availability at DXB may also be a factor.

South Australia has a lot more than wine. History for example, many Muslim people might be interested in tracing the history of the afghans in Australia. That starts in South Australia

If you fly long haul then (IMO) it is more important when you arrive than when you depart.
I fly to Dubai a lot. Most flights from MEL, SYD and BNE arrive in DXB in the wee hours of the morning (not good). Funnily enough these same EK flights arrive in the wee hours into Australia.
However the genius of the 2.40AM flight from MEL, is that you also arrive into DXB at around 2pm (time for a stretch, dinner and then glorious sleep). That flight returns to MEL at around midnight (niiiiiiiiiice).

The best flight to DXB are the 6.00am flights from SYD and PER but coming from MEL, there is no chance of ever taking those flights. I wish they would move those SYD and PER flights to a 9.00am departure.
