This is probably one for Dave Noble, but as part of our Europe trip next month on EK we will be leaving from somewhere in Germany. Ideally we would have liked to fly out of Munich as that is where our friends are, however EK only has 330s on the MUC-DXB route. How different are the EK 330s in F compared with the 777/380 which, I understand, have the new cabins? I’m guessing that the 330s have not all been upgraded (or may not be receiving upgrades at all)?

We can get over to Frankfurt on the ICE train (which takes about 3 hours as I understand it) and take an EK 777 from FRA-DXB. Now most normal people would tell me to just take the flight from MUC but, well, I hope I’m among fellow aircraft nerds and thus a bit safe from ridicule...am I being silly repositioning to FRA for a 777? ;)

From what I have heard, you will probably get the 777-200 with standard seats, whilst the 330 will feature seats with significantly more recline. Note that this info is not from my personal experience, but reported by a friend who is an EK-enthusiast. The "private suites" are apparently only on aircraft which service long-haul routes. Some would argue that FRA-DXB qualifies as long-haul, but compared to DXB-SYD it's just a quick hop.

If this is indeed the case, you'd be better off just flying out of MUC. Not only with the seat be better, you'll save yourself a train trip.

Thanks but the 777 is a 777-300 ER and I believe that most, if not all, of these have been reconfigured to the new F suites. From a bit of Googling it seems that the 330 seats are older. However the most recent information I could find was from last year so I am wondering if things have changed with the 330s?

In AFF spirit, you're not mad to do the 3hr train to FRA. It's quite easy, and in some cities (hello London) is about how long it'd take to get the the airport anyway.

Unless the flight was overnight though, it's probably not worth the hassle and you may as well just go from MUC.

Thanks James. It is an overnight flight, leaving at around 8am and arriving into DXB just after 6am so the bed is important. Plus after getting to Europe on the 380 all the way (SYD-DXB-LHR) it will feel disappointing to leave in an inferior cabin.

Now where in the world is Dave “Mr EK” Noble... :)

Havent seen him here since he stopped "modding". Perhaps he's fogotten about us.

Note the 8am departure may entail an overnight in FRA on top of the train trip, although presumably the MUC flight goes ~ same timings so you'd have a night in Munchen anyway.

Oops. I meant 8pm departure.

Oh, plenty of time then. Haha. The trains in Germany are exceptionally efficient so you should be able to schedule for a reasonably precise FRA arrival time.

Enjoy the trip. I suspect I know your decision now....

I wish it was that simple James :). Honestly I don’t even really want to go to Germany in November but my wife has been “reconnecting” with old friends recently (damn you Facebook, damn you) and she wants to meet up with a very old friend near Munich. That means we have to leave lovely, mild Bellagio, drive to Milan, catch a dodgy inter-Europe LCC to Berlin, spend a few days and then fly again down to Munich to meet the friend before the “cross country” train to Frankfurt. Sheesh! Before all that I had a nice, easy EK flight booked out of Milan... :)

Could you do a large chunk of it by train? Milan-Berlin should be doable, and will be much more relaxing than an LCC. Sure it's longer, but add airport transfers and the difference is not as great. Berlin-Munich will be easy.

As will Munich-FRA.

Can confirm the 3 hours, did the trip today
