I'm making my first passing through CAI in a few weeks and will need a visa on arrival.

Has anyone done this recently? Any idea what the current cost is and the process? I believe CAI is a bit of a corrupt mess and it starts from the minute you step off the plane.

I'm flying in on RJ from BKK/AMM. Are the RJ staff (in BKK) fairly competent when it comes to knowledge of the Visa on Arrival? Don't really want to get in an argument with them at the airport at midnight...

Thanks

I went 4 years ago, and you're right. It is a bit of mess as soon as you get off the plane.

Thanks. That's what I'm trying to confirm. I think USD is right... Just lot sure if it's still $15

as of three weeks ago, USD15. all straight forward. visa on arrival is well known. won't have any problems with check in staff.

Cool that's what I was after, thanks a lot.

Are they still doing the dodgy "come get your visa from this travel agent" (at a higher fee) story, or is it under control a little more?

We flew EgyptAir JFK-CAI-BKK last week and had break of about 10 hours. I had made hotel booking but on arrival met EgyptAir reps who advised they would arrange free visa, hotel stay and tour of Giza Pyramids. We were told cost of usd40 pp but as the number of pax increased to 9, the cost dropped to usd30 pp.

We paid in AUD. The wait for visa was about 40 minutes, then we were led through customs and through to car park where a mini-bus awaited. Off we went to Giza. On the way an English-speaking guide joined us. At the end of the tour, we were dropped off at Le Meridien Heliopolis. For us three family members, we were provided three rooms! Buffet dinner and transfer to airport included.

As our passports were kept by airline, we had to collect them before proceeding to immigration and beyond.

Sounds like a great deal!

What happened to the hotel reservations you had made? Did you have to cancel and refund them? (was that possible in time)

Indeed. I asked the MS agent to call Novotel Cairo Airport which agreed to cancel res without penalty. The visa alone would have costed usd25 each.

Is this something new ?
Or is the visa on arrival only available if your stay is less than X days ?
When I went on a six week holiday to Egypt in late 2010, I had to apply for a visa at the Egyptian consulate in Melbourne before I left, and yes I hold an Aussie passport.

No. In 2010 they had it, but I was only there for 5 days.

It was all a bit of a pointless process...

You go to a counter, hand over $25 US Cash (it's gone up from $15) and they give you a sticker to put in your passport and then go through passport control.

At least other places pretend to do a little work for your visa money!
