Any thoughts on this?

Is the Velocity Platinum 100 status credits EVERY YEAR? or only the first year?

I have Edge now, but thinking of moving across really only for the status credits.. is this stupid? ($200 more per year, but i'll probably get Gold with the extra 100)

From the pointshacks website, so long as you can spend $50, a year, yep, its the amex edge card, that 100 VFF SC is yours, annually, ie, every year.
The annual fee must be quite expensive, and your annual income must be high enough for them to approve it, in the first place.
And that you would have the capacity to repay them, or the debt will spiral out of control.

$50,000 per year not $50

Do you mean that you have the AmEx Platinum Edge and you're thinking of moving to the AmEx Velocity Platinum for the Status Credits if you spend $50,000 per year? I agree with @henrus that you're not exactly making it easy for us to help you!

Assuming that's what you're asking, as with everything, it's a trade-off. With the Platinum Edge you're paying a lower annual fee, earning more points per dollar spent (assuming that you only use it at supermarkets and petrol stations), and earning a flexible points currency that you can transfer into many different frequent flyer programmes.

But if the 100 SC's makes the difference between Velocity Silver and Velocity Gold, then forsaking the above advantages may be worthwhile.

Sorry, meant to put k at the end of the $50, ie $50k.
Edit: I don't have the Amex card, just chasing up on info.
Sorry.
For the OP, if you can afford it, keeping the 100 VFF SC, helps, if you are going to travel a lot, (international flights speaking), and plus buy your groceries from Coles and earn VFF SC that way.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

ya, thanks sorry for the poor explanation.

yes I have Platinum Edge now - was thinking of moving to to the Amex Platinum Velocity..

It cost $395 (velocity) vs $195 (edge) ...

Also I guess the Velocity Amex card has less flexible points - only Velocity...

I can't really see the reason you'd go for Platinum Velocity over Edge, I guess spending $200 for 100 SC's.

It's not $200. You have to spend $50K minimum per annum in order to get those 100SCs.

There are other benefits to the Velocity. A full evaluation is required need on personal circumstances and loyalty to Virgin - more points using the Amex Platinum (I use it and stick to Virgin, Coles, Flybuys etc)

The Virgin Platinum AMEX also provides the annual return flight, which on our side I use for Mrs Hawk (as she's Red and we pool points & SC to me) when we travel together. That benefit alone is worth ~$200+ as I'll generally use it on a BNE-MEL return.

ya, the Edge gives $200 in travel credit, which is worth less i guess (than a return BNE-MEL)

YMMV - at least the $200 can be used wherever you want, whereas for VA pax you've got to use it on their flights and it doesn't credit points or SC. From BNE I have pretty much any destination except for WA, so it's a sweet deal.

There's also the AmEx Explorer CC to consider.
Seeing as you likely won't be getting any sign-up bonuses, I'd be interested to know what others' thoughts are on switching between different AmEx cards from MR-points cards to Velocity points cards and vice versa and whether it would be worth it without the sign-up bonus. (It probably depends on what your spending habits are.)
