Econ -> Premium Econ upgrade via seat selection?

Hi folks,

So, I'm doing a trans-Tasman flight tomorrow on an Air NZ 744, and inexplicably a seat in row 30 is showing up as selectable online (and says it's economy), even though it looks (and seat maps on other sites confirm) like premium economy.

So, I switched my seat selection over to the row 30 seat, but am I just going to be bumped back into a random Y seat on check in? I don't have any status with Air NZ or *A, so I don't quite understand what's happening here.

It looks like I have a decent shot at an exit row, should I go for that instead?

So after taking the flight, it seems Air NZ doesn't sell premium econ from BNE-AKL, even though they seem to use 744s and 777s for the flight fairly frequently, so it was a Y+ seat (and very comfy it was too!) with Y service.

So it's just sheer good luck on my part, which is a bit unusual!

In the air, typical Air NZ - e.g. excellent.

There was an absolutely huge queue for Y check in though, which was a bit disappointing. Maybe I'm just too used to having status on QF and bypassing those.

Helps to have status for both QF and Air NZ if flying them ...

PE on the 744 and 777s are sold a Economy for T-T PAX.

Normally only those with Koru, *G or AirNZ status can select them until a few days before the flight.

SWMBO and I travelled on upper-deck PE seats MEL to AKL last month.

Inexplicably we were upgraded to Premium Economy last month, Sydney to LA. Perhaps being a QC or Silver FF did the trick. Was much appreciated on this long haul flight, though partner likley to be unhappy with Economy in the future!

Yeah, I happened to get lucky a day and a bit beforehand. I really do like Air NZ sometimes.

Could have been better, I've never been upper deck on a 747 and would really like to!
