Hi all.

I am flying to AKL next weekend and I am looking for some lunch or dinner recommendations.

Budget is not really an issue but I would like to be able to buy wine by the glass. I am over Asian food at the moment. Given the short time left, places with hard to get bookings should probably be left off the list as well.

Thanks, pw.

I love the seafood chowder at the Auckland Harbour/Market area. Best I've ever had!

The Foodstore in the Viaduct is a great restaurant - not cheap but great flavours and wine by the glass

I highly recommend Euro Bar also! I had dinner there last Monday, and only called for a table as I was ready to leave the hotel. They were happy to have me, even though there were no more bookings after me. :D

Some pics:

200g grain-fed Angus w/ creamed spinach, horseradish, mash, vegetables of the day, and a glass of the Soho SB (which is almost cut off the side):

Dessert was the 'roasted white chocolate', which was a deconstructed cheesecake:

Another vote for Euro - really enjoyed it when I was there last September. Wonderful seafood. Not really a casual meal venue though (IMHO).

Looks good.

Thanks everyone.

Slightly late to the party here, but I'll throw my 2 cents in too.

- Euro is indeed good, but I wasn't blown away. It is well located assuming you're staying somewhere downtown.
- The Food Store is reliably good and again easy to get to.
- The Grove is very good, right in the middle of the city, but maybe a little more formal.
- Clooney was our favourite when we lived in Auckland. Not quite as convenient to get to as the others, but hardly difficult.

There are plenty of more casual places around BritoMart and up on Ponsonby Rd too.

Well, I had lunch at The French Cafe today and I really enjoyed it.

I haven't bothered to make any other bookings so I'll take it as it comes. :)

Well, in the end, the eating part of the trip was a bit of a washout. The onset of a cold made my tastebuds go on their own trip and I wasn't prepared to pay for food that I wasn't really tasting.

Having said that, The French Cafe was excellent. I ate from the à la carte menu but the table next to me had the degustation menu which also looked good. I let the waiter guide me with wines and he chose well. I didn't take any photos for you. We were in the back dining room with no opportunity to take discreet photos.

The restaurant was a short, flat walk away from my hotel so I could waddle back there after lunch.

Euro - try the slow cooked rotisserie chicken with simon gault's secret herb seasoning/rub services with peanut slaw.. it is utterly delicious. i'm salivating now thinking about it

Ostro - the Savannah beef on the bone was very enjoyable

around ponsonby rd - Moo Chow Chow for soft shell crab almost every time I'm in Auckland

I was told about a fish n chip shop a ferry ride away from AKL that is worth a visit but can't remember the name. Does anyone know the place?

Looooove Snap Dragon at Viaduct Harbour. Great food, huge range of wines (by the glass also) and quite reasonably priced when you remember it is all in NZ dollars. Has a look and feel a bit like the SYD Flounge, come to think of it.. vertical garden etc. Also a good place to meet people.. after you've eaten, you can head to the bar upstairs. ;)
