I think Comoman was responding to the OP's statement that they'd previously booked codeshares through VA (which would have had a VA flight #) but is looking at booking directly with SQ on this occasion, which of course means no eligible sectors as they would be SQ flight numbers.

We've just done something similar with our upcoming trip to Europe i.e. booked directly with SQ this time as the fares were cheaper and we were able to do seat selection, purchase exit seats etc without any issues - this trip won't accrue enough SCs to requalify either of us for Gold anyway, so as we're going to have to do a few domestic flights anyway to pick up the necessary SCs, we'll get the eligible sectors from those.

Yep thanks Jurahn.. I see the point of the OP, having now re read the post.

The seat selection thing really bugs me, even booking direct with SQ they only open limited seats for advanced selection.

If you have booked the VA codeshare the website won't allow you to select seats, if you download the SQ app though and get the SQ pnr from VA you can login that way and choose seats, although again only limited selection available until t-48 I believe

That's odd because i just booked flights and could pretty much choose any seat. Which allowed me to book exit seats on the economy legs at a small additional cost. So my experience was really good.

Yes exit seats are often available for a charge. Even as *A gold it usually only leaves very few seats to select from, it's frustrating as I often get stuck in middle seat and then need to be awake at 1am at T-48 to change my seat

I think it was discussed elsewhere, but anecdotally, there seems to be different seating availability depending on the route/date/time (even taking into account loading).

Haven't used the app, but choosing a seat through the mobile site is pretty good too – whether booked through SQ or VA.
