A friend flew United to the US end of August and returned middle of September.

He has not joined Mileage Plus. Is he able to claim the miles now if he was to join Mileage Plus?

JohnK,

Look at the T & C as they normally have about a 2 -3 month period after the flight in which someone can join. I can't recall the figure for UA.

The rules appear to state the following:

"Mileage can be earned for activity that occurred on or after your enrollment date in Mileage Plus"

However, this can be subject to the discretion of the person processing the retro-claim. Why not give it a try!

I guess it is worth a try although it is very clear in their member's guide that it is not allowable.

Mileage can be accrued only for flights, hotel stays, car rentals or transactions actually taken or performed by the member after the member's official enrolment date, and can be applied only to the member's account. Mileage will be credited only for flights actually flown by the member. Mileage credit will not be awarded for flight cancellations, except that United may, at its discretion, give credit for flights cancelled due to mechanical reasons or schedule reduction.
