noob question:

If you fly out of London on the evening of Saturday the 3rd of August , and arrive in your destination city, let's say Timbuktu, at 1:45am on Sunday the 4th of August, (planning to sleep and then leave the same day in the afternoon)

When you book your stay at the Timbuktu Mariott, do you book for a one-night stay on the 3rd of August or the 4th of August?

thanks

3rd august. you should request a late checkout... should be fine if you arrive that late

3rd of August and note your arrival time of approximately 2.00am on 4 August. Note unless you're there for a couple of days you'll be expected to leave at the usual check out time.

If you list a check in date of 4 August then you can check in from 1400 hours that day, i.e. 12 hours after you arrive in the city.

I would book for the 3rd August and request a late check out or pay for 2 nights depending on what time you are leaving on the 4th.

IMHO it would depend what the issues would be if you had to be out of your room by say midday

with a very late arrival most hotels will give you to at least 1pm, some may offer a 6pm checkout for a fee which may be only $50-$60 which might be worthwhile for you. it will vary between hotels, you could always call and check

That's were Elite status with a hotel chain can be handy for late checkout so maybe select a hotel belonging to a chain that you have the highest status with. Or if you're a Hilton Gold or Plat you could always approach the chain eg Marriott & see if they will match your status with Hilton.

If no elite status you could always ask for a late checkout gratis or they may be able to give you a half day rate until 1800.

There are a few hotels here and there who will give you a 24 hour stay from the time you checkin. I've done this before at the Sheraton Four Points at LAX on their 24/24 rate but you need to arrange this ahead of time ie min 48 hours notice so can they plan to set aside a room for your time of arrival.

I don't know if it's really necessary but if I have a really late arrival I let the hotel know so they don't assume me to be a no-show and sell my room from under me.

I've used the same at the Novotel Bangkok Airport, it's handy for short transits!

Definitely worthwhile... I lost a few [agent made] bookings as a young player for arriving late evening, with the hotel presuming I was a no show. Adding insult to injury I've also had one oversold and had to send me elsewhere... thankfully 'elsewhere' was nicer in the end, and became the new normal for a time! :) The others just scrambled to fix something in-house.

Cheers.

Checking in to the Concorde Hotel KUL once at 4:30am, I was told "we thought you weren't coming", I asked to see my confirmation, which they did, it clearly showed me arriving on a 3am flight. Sometimes there's not much you can do to help.

Have never let a hotel know I'm turning up late but read the t&cs of your booking carefully. Some hotels will auto cancel if you don't turn up by a certain. Time (without notice) or if you don't provide a credit card guarantee .

Some small hotels or serviced apartments have limited check in hours , likewise they sometimes have a process you need to follow if wanting to check in late. Best to read information about the hotel before you book and ensure they have a 24x7 or at least suitable window to check in ( or you are happy with the out of hours arrangement)

My laugh was turning up at an ungodly hour of the morning at a hotel and the staffer saying "we have been waiting for you all night". Trust me... I had been wanting to be at the hotel all night too.
