Would it be best to purchase a video camera in Brisbane or Singapore Airport thinking probaly Singapore

Most of the electronic stuff I've found at DF stores have been more expensive than the local good guys \ bing lee.

Furthermore if you negotiate at either of these places you can usually get an even better deal.

I personally only use DF stores to buy booze, and sometimes small electronic items which I want to use on my trip but forgot to get prior to going.

As above, I’d suggest a store in a market in a city you’re visiting or where you are, shop around and you might find a very good deal.

The claim back GST at airport - making sure you have the item with you.

i concur with the above. Shop around locally and get a good deal. Then claim the GST back at the airport. Check the tax free airport store website and compare it with what you can buy locally. The locally bought cost when divided by 11 is the GST you can be refunded.

Recently bought a video cam. Printed the tax free listing on the airport store's site and took it to a local retailer. They matched it. I bought and claimed the GST back - nice saving.

I'm gonna buck the trend and say Singapore. The Singapore dollar is quite strong at the moment and as many people have attested to here, Australian duty free stores are often a rip-off. The Mustafa department store in Singapore can have very cheap goods and I suspect - although I don't know - that Changi would have good prices too. Of course, be sure to confirm the warranty is international.

Pretty hard to give an answer without more specifics, as prices vary not only by country but by model, as some suppliers have uniform worldwide pricing, others dont. Its also important to keep an eye on locals with things like a Video Cam, they are not as popular as they once were and occasionally because of slow sales the fall into the clearance bin, I picked up a Sony HD HDD model at Officeworks for $230 recently that was selling for $980 elsewhere, I doubt you could beat that OS.

Another point that does not appear to have been mentioned is warranty. Some warranties do not cross country borders so it 'may' be better to pay a little more locally and ensure that you have the backup should you need it. Alternately look for an International warranty.

Sometimes the piece of mind is worth more than a few dollars saved :!:
