I am flying MEL/LAX / VANCOUVER. . I will be travelling across Canada into USA and eventually back LAX/MEL.

Where is best place to buy some Duty Free spirits to consume during the holiday?

I wouldn't bother personally. Depending where you are in the USA, just go to BevMo or similar (join Club Bev, it's free, to save on a lot of stuff usually a few bucks a bottle).

As an example, a 1.75L bottle of Tanqueray Gin is $25.98USD (club bev price). A 1L is $27.99 and 750mL is $17.99. Dan Murphys is $41.99 for 750mL. F1rst duty free is $31.99 for 1L.

We are gouged here so don't buy ex-AU, and the US liquor prices are so reasonable, that most duty free stores in US airports are not big.

You can purchase duty free liquor on arrival in Canada, and i'd probably suggest that; the Canadian liquor stores are state-owned, and prices are fixed. It's not great.

I buy my 'duty free' alcohol in BevMo before I leave the USA now, and pack them well in my luggage :)

Agreed, it's not worth buying DF here to take to the US. Last year I brought a bottle of Vodka from SYD DF before flying to the LAX, the grog shop down the street from where I was staying was selling a bottle twice as large for half the price as DF here in AU.

In California you can pick up alcohol at a pharmac_; their prices are pretty good. I paid $18 for a 1.75L bottle.

Let me guess: Surgical alcohol, and ethanol, respectively???

I'll get my coat...

Nope, a lot of the stuff that you can get in a bottlo here in Australia that you can't get in a 7/11 or other servo because they are scared you'll drink & drive.

I was a little stunned the first time I saw it in CA.
