Duty free questions

Greetings,

Friend of mine will be arriving to Sydney via Singapore. I've asked to buy two 100ml bottles of Perfume. Wondering if that would be allowed on the plane to Sydney. I was told by my mates that they dont allow any sort of liquids on board. I was aware of such restrictions but I always thought its ok to take duty free items? Was there some kind of rule that you have to purchase all duty free items only in Sydney? I was also told this sort of rule does not apply when you fly out of Sydney. Can someone please confirm....

My information might be a bit old. But the best bet would be to buy in Singapore, during the stop there. The shops have a service where you pick up the goods at the gate just before boarding and after passing through the screening. Well, that was the deal in late 2007.

You're allowed to take liquid containers of up to 100ml on board so they should be ok.

It will be fine, some DF shops get confused and ask if you have an onward flight after SIN-SYD and as such they say you cannot buy more than 100ml, but they have no clue about Australian domestic, they have to advise for the worst case situation where you say SIN-SYD-MEL the SYD-MEL is an international flight where you cannot carry more than 100mls in a single item.

Oh and i do this flight all the time (except SIN-MEL) with DF, for sure no issues.

Thanks for the replies guys... I was told no DF items allowed from Singapore whatsoever. I do also know about the DF bags which gets sent in but AFAIK they go get screened along with you. It's like a grey area Seriously, Sydney Customs cannot be blocking overseas DF items for the sole reason to help the local DF stores to make more money? Anyhow I'll tell my mate to get some and I'm sure it will be ok.

As long as it fits into the 1 litre clear plastic bag.

TO the OP:
Sydney customs have no reason to block liquids for people getting off a plane.

I can't see that there's any 'blocking' going on, just security regulations on the size/amount of Liquid items one can take through screening.

Buying at DF & then delivered to the gate, should be fine.

Perhaps the "no DF items" information you received was about bringing previously purchased DF into transit in Singapore, as below?

From Singapore Airlines website:

Duty-free purchases:

• Customers who are flying out of Australia may carry liquid, aerosol and gel items purchased from Australian duty free shops located after security screening points.
• For direct flights from Singapore to Australia, duty free LAG items are allowed into Australia provided these items are purchased on board or are delivered by duty free staff to the gate-hold room in a sealed bag with proof of purchase.
• Customers who are entering Australia via transit in Singapore will NOT be allowed to carry duty free LAG items purchased from previous sectors. These items will have to be disposed off at the gatehold room.

As far as DT perfume goes... (here's my 2c)... I don't feel it's the big bargain it used to be. Price-wise, for most popular frangrances, I think it's hard to beat the local warehouse chemists/ chain pharmacies.

I bought a nice perfume in Australia before my recent overseas trip & was interested to compare prices with the DF shops (in Hong Kong, US & Aus).
I found it in each DF store i looked in, and none of them beat the price i paid for it at home.

Misstam if you are in the USA again dont bother with duty free perfumes.A department store sale will beat the duty free price anywhere especially if you buy in a tax free state such as Delaware.Often 30-40% below Aussie prices.

Drron, thanks for the tip! I'll be heading back to NC this year... will have to look into the 'tax free states'.
