I am heading across the ditch via SYD next week and am looking at some duty free shopping. I am interested in purchasing an IPOD and a Garmin Sta Nav unit. The questions are:

Am I better off buying the items as cheap as possible from a Harvey Norman or Big W type shop, and collecting the tax back as I pass through imigration in SYD, OR should I buy the items airside in SYD, or look to buy the goods in NZ airside? Any thougts you have would be appreaciated.

Avoid SYD duty free. You'll get no discount. If wanting to buy in Australia, I think buying through WOW, Harvey Norman, JB's etc and claiming the cash back at the airport is the best option.

In NZ, try browsing Duty Free Stores New Zealand - Duty Free NZ - Free delivery to all New Zealand airports - if you sign up for their frequent buyer's club, you'll get 5% off the price for electrical, and 20% off for cosmetics, booze etc if you pre-order.

I'm not sure I've seen Garmin anywhere duty free, although IPOD's are pretty common (I assume that's what you were after). Retail for IPOD's doesn't vary much, but it's still wise to shop around and try to negotiate a deal. I think JB's had a discount on them recently.

For the amount you could save I would just get it here. For your Garmin I would be thinking about eBay personally. I saved about $70 on the one I bought - brand new in the box.
