I want to take some gin/scotch(nothing fancy) in for the rellies when i go to the UK next week . Is it better to buy it on arrival into LHR,buy it on transit throught Syd or Sin? or buy it on departure ex Wlg where the price is pretty good.

When you take into account the hassle fee (often a hidden, but surprisingly high cost), it is always best to buy these things at the pub 65 metres from your relative's house.

So its a hassle to walk out of arrivals, buy 2 bottles of Gin and go to your relatives? As oppose to going to your relatives empty handed, asking where the nearest pub is, finding it is 2KM away and wondering on an opportunity lost?

Inbound to Oz the savings on Bombay Sapphire Gin are tremendous and certainly worth the extra 30 secs of work.

Exactly, duty free is worthwhile especially, for the big savings that can be made.

In relation to the question at hand. The only issue to watch out for is the limits on liquids in carry on luggage. If the drinks are in your checked luggage no problems. But if carrying on, you can only get these drinks either on arrival or at the airport when you last enter the aircraft. Sounds like you might be flying WLG-SYD-SIN-LHR, in which case you can only buy at SIN or LHR as the carry on liquids restrictions will get you at SIN. Any grog from SYD or WLG will be taken.

If buying at SIN they take your pruchase to the gate for you to collect as your board the aircraft. But you need to allow something like an hour for this to work. Also if you are doing an internal flight immediately from LHR then you might also be subject to liquids restrictions. I know this was the case in FRA for someone doing BNE-SIN-FRA-MAD.

Buy at SIN. LHR arrivals, IME, does not have duty free for inbound passengers. Or else buy on the plane.

To clarify - LHR does have VAT-free liquor for sale, but not duty-free. I think.

Yep SIN is the place to get it, especially given the AUD is stronger again. From memory a bottle of Bombay should be less than ~$20AUD
