Duty Free Alcohol Rip off

There was a fellow AFFer and myself passing thru BNE Duty Free and he had a look at a bottle of wine in both AKL Duty Free and BNE Duty free and the cheapest place by a few $$$ was Dan Murphy's.

Wine has much lower duty, hence it is often cheaper in a discount wine shop. Spirits can be good value DF, but not as much as they were a decade or so ago.

With the age of the internet providing fantastic choice and convenience I feel like duty free has become somewhat redundant. I did a survey recently while overseas (USA & KL) and duty free was only ~$20 cheaper. Given there was reduced options and I would have had to cart the purchases around with me, it makes sense just to buy online without the pressure.

I'm an aging fart where duty free was a thrill. I guess I'm still stuck there. Not to mention that I save about $30 a month, or $360 a year.

When I was in Osaka at a regular Bottle O in the Namba area, my favourite whisky Dalmore 12 was ¥4500 ($60 aud) & 18 yr ¥10,000 ($115 aud) vs $97 & $219 at DM's respectively. Next time I return, I'll be swilling the 12 on the ground & bringing the 18yr home.

Even more pronounced at 86 yen to the Aussie.

Way cheaper booze taxes for now, I also make the most of it while I'm there.

I just online pre-purchased 2 bottles of Bombay Saphire (1 Litre) for $56 AUD from JR Duty Free Perth Airport. Very happy with that price.

Below are examples of regular supermarket prices in $US. For 1 litre bottles. I don't think I've seen it cheaper anywhere.

If you purchase 2x1L outbound, you need to carry it onboard. Do you purchase only if on a direct flight to your destination?

What happens at airports like HKG or SIN if you have to leave the aircraft for a change of flights as you're carrying more than 100ml fluids? Can you get the bottles through security?

I was on a flight from SYD to BKK the same flight then continued to DXB. At BKK you could stay on the aircraft during re fueling or get off for about 45 mins. You were told that if you got off you had to take everything with you and if you had any duty free liquids you would not be able to bring that back on board with you.

Friend had same issue returning via NZ from Chile to Australia. He'd bought some great red wine. They had to get off the plane. Told him he'd definitely lose it if he took it with him so decided to gamble and push it far back into the locker as he could. He saw everyone lose their Chilean wine. His was still in his locker on return.

I suspected as much.

OTOH, we flew QF1 to LHR in June - everyone had to disembark with everything and then had to go through security. I can't remember about fluids at that security checkpoint (but ISTR having no trouble taking a couple of Voss sparkling water 500ml back onto the plane from the J lounge).

Just buy at the local supermarket and send through in checked baggage. That's cheaper than duty free anyway.

The Loop in AKL - premium NZ gin. Friend picked it up for me so did not realise the price was a rip off. Was $15-$20 more than retail price!!

JR Duty Free in CNS was having a 25% off sell out (store changing hands) so I picked these up on a spur of the moment decision. It seems I was not ripped off.

The purchase was:
Jameson Rarest Vintage - 2007 ($330)
Wild Turkey Masters Keep - 2015 ($135)
Wild Turkey Diamond Anniversary - 60 years of Jimmy Russells employment - ($97.50)

I've looked for comparisons, which aren't the easiest to find available, but here's a few:
