I am looking to fly JQ16 (KIX-CNS-MEL) next month, given the CNS-MEL leg will depart from the international terminal, would JQ allow people to carry duty-free alcohol onboard at KIX or would they deny it on the basis that CNS isn't my final destination and hence I can only pick up duty-free alcohol at CNS?

Jetstar is not the one allowing or denying you to carry duty free onboard. They will have zero issues with you carrying duty free alcohol onboard in Osaka however it will be taken away by security in Cairns.

The Australian government make the rules and they're enforced by security with no part from the airlines. In Australia the regulation is that all international transit passengers must go through security when arriving from overseas. This means that when you land in Cairns you'll have to go through security again with the 100ml rule applying. You can buy duty free in Cairns (after you've cleared security during the transit) or upon arrival in Melbourne.

Note this is slightly different if it was the reverse MEL-CNS-KIX where you wouldn't need to clear security again if on the same flight given you've landed from a flight within Australia they let those passengers directly back into the departure lounge.

I imagine some duty free staff may refuse to sell products to a passenger who's onward boarding pass is CNS-MEL ?

Thanks, I flew the temporary QF LHR-DRW-SYD route and no security screening took place in DRW as our flight was segregated and never come in contact with passengers from other flights, hence prompting the question, but of course I cannot compare JQ to one of the most premium QF route.

I am only interested in buying things in KIX duty free if I won the ballot to buy one of the rare Japanese whisky, I imagine if the worse comes to worse, I can just ask to be let out of the security screening and go through immigration at CNS and make my own way to MEL? JQ will probably hate me for this as they have to search and unload my luggage, but I assume CNS has immigration facility to handle international arrival passengers?

Although the risk I run is JQ might anticipate the potential problem and just deny anyone to bring duty free alcohol onboard if you are checked all the way through to MEL.

Yes this was a unique setup due to it being the only flight (although Darwin does normally have transit security running for international flights).

You don't even need to ask to be let out. When you get off the Japan flight in Cairns (I've done this quite a few times) you can either head towards transit security or head towards immigration. No one will stop you from heading through immigration in Cairns and going landside. If you want your check bag you'll need to ask for it but they will fetch it for you (just might take some time).

Jetstar sells domestic tickets on JQ16 from CNS to MEL so they'll even have a check in desk open up to 1 hour prior to departure. JQ16 has a 2hr 20min layover in Cairns between the KIX-CNS flight and the CNS-MEL flight so you could potentially even get back on the same flight by putting the bottle in a piece of luggage and then checking it.

Otherwise also nothing stopping you from spending a day in Cairns and then booking a new flight back home.

No Jetstar will no police anyones duty free allowance as it's the passengers responsibility.

I've had Japan -> Cairns -> Sydney before, and never had issues with duty free alcohol in cabin (I assume that's what is meant here?).

My understanding is, once you get off at Cairns and go through immigration, that's it, you are no longer an international passenger.

Is this not the case nowdays or has something changed? Very relevant for me right now.

Why would security of all things take away alcohol? There are no limits on alcohol carrying on domestic flights. I remember they once wanted me to open up my backpack with alcohol, because I had the samurai whisky and it looks super like a weapon, but then when they saw it, they just laughed, complimented the whisky and let me through.

It depends on the flights. If staying on a 787 service with the same or other international flight number then you remain an international passenger.

Some Jetstar connections from Japan via Cairns to other domestic cities see you clear immigration in Cairns and then you walk over to the domestic terminal and board an A320 further south.

Nothing really has changed by in the case of JQ16 there are some days where the 787 flight continues to Melbourne, those booked the whole way through on JQ16 clear immigration/customs in Melbourne so remain an international passenger on the leg from Cairns to Melbourne.

All passengers transiting at Australian airports (including remaining on the same flight) must go through security again (unless the flight has arrived from a different Australian domestic airport), therefore the standard 100ml rules apply when going through transit security in Cairns.

Right that makes sense, thanks. Bad luck for Melbourne then!
