Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find a thread on this.
Is it possible to buy duty free alcohol (thinking some good Chilean wine:)) at SCL before boarding QF28 to SYD? Is SCL a HKG (not allowed) or a SIN (delivered at the gate) type experience when it comes to buying duty free liquids?

Yes, you certainly can buy duty free alcohol at SCL airside in the duty free shops. Just don't try taking it onto a Qantas plane yourself, as it'll be confiscated at the last-minute security desk after check-in as you're about to board. Buy it early enough so that the duty free store can take it to the cabin door for your collection.

Whilst on this point, does anyone know WHY Qantas does these additional security checks for liquids overseas, and at which airports they do it at?

It's not QF, it's Australian government regulation (brought in post 9/11 and never rescinded).
