In July next year I need to get from MRS (Marseille) to Durham in the north of England. I've been assuming I'd need to go to LHR, have a night in London and on to Durham by train the next morning. But a new search has revealed that there is a flight connection on KLM via AMS that would take me to MME (Tees-side Airport), which is in fact nearer to Darlington than Durham. This far ahead it's hard to see the options for getting from the airport into Durham itself; the airport website has various links to bus & train companies but I can't search for that distant date. Is anyone familiar with that airport and can give me an idea of the possibilities? I would be arriving quite late (close to 10 pm) so might have to resort to a taxi, but it's a 40 mile journey.

I used to live 2 Klms from Teesside airport and my sister still lives there, my brother every year goes from Sydney to AMS on kLM, don't know what time he arr but I am sure it's about midday, if you arr like you say at 10pm there won't be much transport only taxi service, if I were you I would get a taxi to Darlington which would take about 10-15min, then pick up a train from there to Durham, Dalington is on the main London to Scotland line so you should have no problem , Google train service from Darlington to Durham, hope this helps.

That's really helpful, bobe, and would certainly have been the best option. [My later timing was because I have complicated local connections to get to MRS on the departure day, which rules out earlier flights.] But the KLM flight MRS-AMS-MME (Teesside) turned out to be rather expensive (as is quite usual for European OW fares) and I had already paid for MRS-LHR on BA, so I've decided to continue on BA from LHR to Newcastle. It will involve changing from T1 to T5 and still getting into Newcastle rather late, but the Metro from the airport into town seems simple, so I'll spend the night there and have plenty to time to go on to Durham the next day.
