I am starting to plan our family trip for 2016 which, if all goes well, will include Dubrovnik to Athens overland. Has anyone ever done this independently? I have found one tour through medexperience that does Split to Athens in 4 days (I am sure we could join this in Dubrovnik). Our plan would be to spend a few days in Dubrovnik at the beginning of our holiday, then head on to Athens and Santornini before exploring Turkey. I'm not keen on flying between the two cities so we may need to leave Dubrovnik for another time. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks Fiona

check with car hire companies, as I am not sure you can get insurance for Albania?

Thanks RB rome2rio is the first site I check when working out a plan for A to B. I think it's a great site, the information is accurate and being Melbourne based gives it a big +1 for me.

I am starting to think that Dubrovnik may be a place we visit on another trip.

Some posters on here have really liked Dubrovnik. When we were there we enjoyed the islands more than Dubrovnik. We caught a ferry from Ancona to Split to get to Croatia. In Croatia I would suggest the Plitvice Lakes as a must see. We travelled independently by ferry bus & train & also saw Mostar & Sarajevo on the same trip-I know it this doesn't get you to Athens but certainly places I would see while in the area

Thanks RB, I think I will take your advice onboard, as it confims my gut feeling, and we will visit Dubrovnik on another trip when we have more time to explore Croatia. This will be our first time in Greece and Turkey and there is more than enough we want to see to fill our 3 1/2 weeks, we are also travellers that prefer to move less and stay longer in each place. Our plan is Athens, Santorini, Bodrum (and surrounds) Istanbul and a sidetrip to Cappadoccia.
