from news.com.au:

SKIMPY shorts, bikinis and kissing in public could soon be banned in Dubai, say authorities.

The glitzy Gulf city has laid down new behaviour guidelines in the local media in an attempt to tame public behaviour.

The outlines of the possible new restrictions appeared in Al Emarat al Youm, an Arabic-language newspaper with close ties to Dubai's ruling family.

As I've always said, it's a great place! Not so go-ahead now, though.

Where would they be without the oil gushing up all over the place? And they have worked so hard to manufacture it.

They have some serious financial issues now too... such a lovely place!

Since when has Dubai had large oil revenues

Sorry Mal but Dubai is part of the UAE not the UAE.Abu Dhabi has the oil,Dubai was trying to make itself a financial and tourist hub.It has just gone cap in hand to Abu Dhabi for a $10 billion hand out.DJ737 is right.
Anyway back to the topic-this really will help the tourist industry wont it?Even mrsdrron and I hold hands in public.A place I've been once and dont see the need to return to.

We might need some clarification on the bit in bold ;)

Dubai is a part of the UAE, but the UAE contains many other countries .. so therefore any reference to the UAE isn't specifically referring to Dubai

Aha - gotcha - why do people have to make it so complicated for us ;)

Dubai also has oil " Dubai will run out of oil by 2025; the UAE as a whole only by the end of the century" from an article in the Asian Times in 2006, it contributed 37% of the GDP in 2005.

Exactly.Even in 2005 oil was not gushing all over the place and was only a third of their income. It is less now.

But they are also reliant on the head offices etc of oil companies aren't they?

So either way, they are very reliant on oil.

Dubai is the sort of place that most (sane) people only ever go to once, or better still, not at all. I've been a few times, but I may not be sane.

It's really good to see that they are in financial difficulties. That's exactly where they deserve to be IMO. Brought it securely on themselves.

Good luck to all that fly Emirates (or for that matter Qatar, Gulf or Etihad). Don't squawk if you get hauled off to some kind of "prison" in the middle of the desert. And don't even think of holding hands or having a drink. Great place, eh? Just give it a miss!

Glad to see you wishing ill fortune on other people in this time of crisis brough about by excessive lending by western rather than arab banks.

That sounds like appropriate action to take in certain public areas, like shopping centres, parks, sporting events, in Australian cities....
