Dubai continues to be a bit of a worry

I think this is more common than we think. Many 'developing' and emerging countries have the veneer of first world countries but the laws and enforcement are not what we expect.

Dubai: We see it where people get detained in Dubai, the Australia property executive detained for 5 years plus manuy others
Singapore: Some Aussie/Singaporean dual nationals are imprisoned in Sing for comments they made in Australia.
China: Business executives detained for bribery allegations

etc etc

Thankyou. That works.
It mentions the victim is a reality tv star? I think? It's a little confusing.

The alleged attackers are friends with a reality TV star. An Apprentice star from last Season is supporting her cause. Don't know why there are 'legal reasons' (vs sensitivity reasons) preventing her name being revealed. It's plastered all over the net anyway.

The two alleged perpetrators had their picture taken with a reality tv star in a separate matter, unrelated.

Thanks for explaining. Why we needed to know? That's the media for you.

UAE has not moved past the blaming victim stage and add the Islam extra marital complication and its a mess.

Can I just say as an older female it does worry me the extent that younger women consume more alcohol and partay harder than ever before. Some men might take advantage and others might get outright confused about mixed messages. Just sayin'.

I think the point was that the two alleged perpetrators were swanning around having their picture taken with 'celebrities' while the poor woman was locked up :(

A sensible observation. A policeman made a similar comment if I recall a couple of years ago in socialist Victoria and some accused him of being 'sexist.' Yet he was simply trying to give sensible advice, no doubt honed through years of exposure to court cases, so super inebriated women did not make it (even) easy(ier) for the small minority of men who behave extremely inappropriately, or who were as drunk as the ladies. I'm not excusing the latter behaviour, but it occurs and may lead to events that in a small number of cases will end up before the judiciary.

As another said, this thread is yet another reason not to visit the Middle East (with the exception of the Israeli democracy and perhaps Jordan). Travelling via HND/ NRT/ MNL/ CEB/ BKK/ ICN/ SIN/ SGN to name a few is so much more enriching, interesting and in most cases unless one deals in drugs, safe.

I've been to Dubai a couple of times now and honestly felt no risk of being honed in on by dubious UAE practices. Always dressed with a scarf, don't carry on in public but I don't make a spectacle here in Oz either. I travel on my own and with my partner. And will return in April with another female AFF'er. In the Hotel and swimming areas - just normal casual and beach wear. Went out and celebrated massively on NYE and was amongst the crowds and sometimes separated from my partner well after midnight. And never felt threatened. Actually 'stood up' to a police officer when he blocked us from going up the ramp to get to the hotel - he just told me another route to use.

Re the article - I think the second link missed out some of the key info so I couldn't connect the dots. But also remember that people are not guilty until proven so.

Dubai rape claim woman's case dropped.

The campaign group, Detained in Dubai, said it was pleased with the decision.
"We expect that the international outrage that this case deserved, influenced authorities to drop the charges, in order to spare the UAE of such negative press.

"Others in the past have not been so fortunate but we hope that this landmarks a fresh approach to similar cases in the future."
